Hat tip to Francis Heaney for helping massage this theme into a rhyming verse. A+ there, buddy. Oh, and this one might be a bit on the Mard side of Medium, just saying.
I’d write more, but I really just want to talk about this stellar book I got this week. And in order to do it justice, I’d like to live with it over the weekend. So look for a book review, nay, rave this Monday. In the meantime, share the puzzle.
mARD (get it? Capital ARD? I kill me.) Loved it – what a quote. Kudos for cluing on LBJ, HORNIER and ISM. Roque? Kugel? My calendar has a comment on those.
Awesome theme.
Had to dig pretty deep to remember DARLA. Although now that I think about it, isn’t she the very first character you see in the show?
Nitpickery: 71A is, as of May 3, properly clued as “Company that formerly sponsored the Orange Bowl”. They dropped their 21-year sponsorship in a cost-cutting move.
Great verse/puzzle. Mard for me too. Had problems in the SE when I put in OHARE for 68a. I haven’t seen the movie yet but knew it was about air travel so… It took a while to give it up. This was actually harder for me than the both the Fri. and Sat. NYT.
Definitely a challenge, especially the SE corner, where I had a big blank spot and “???”s coming out of my head last night. Had to sleep on it and got the Aha seven hours later.
Hand up for OHARE instead of OMAHA.
Will have to look it up in my Funk & Wagnall’s.
Oh, and NPR had a long piece on hoarding–and it’s not actually an OCD dx.
Attempted to put Etta YUMA or Etta BENA in. Etta KETT?
I tried to Google for those last few squares, but couldn’t get anything that way, so used Reveal.
You win again, BEQ! but great puzzle. I’d like to leave you with this thought from my husband’s T-shirt:
I’m retired, You’re not. Nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah!
Now that’s a verse puzzle.
Damn, can you cram any more proper names in there? Buffy, band members, the blog name, man did I get an education today. There was no escape hatch in the crossings anywhere to bail out. (I know I won’t be leavin’ here…)
The upper-right concurred with that, and solidly stamped WTF on my forehead. Good news is I can get back into the club today, bad news is the stamp doesn’t wash off.
Definitely a Hard here, though worth the effort.
Wonderful theme/verse!
DARLA, KUGEL, (wrong) OHARE made it Hard for me.
