Since it seems like every other site on the planet is doing something about the World Cup, why go against the grain? Even at BEQ.com HQ, La Liz is strutting around saying that it’s England’s year, it’s 1966 all over again, blah, blah, blah. (I guess that’s the last year England won the thing.) It’s gotten to the point now where she’s so assured of the outcome, she’s already planning how we’re going to watch the Quarter Finals that will be happening at the same time as a wedding we are attending. Yes, you read that properly. My wife is plotting escape routes/backup plans to watch sports at a wedding we are attending. I win!
But anyway, I digress. There’s two things you can always count on with English football fans and the World Cup: they will always talk themselves into overconfidence believing in whatever bunch of players they cobble together no matter what the talent level is, and they will always have their pop stars put together songs like this dreck to cheer the team on. And I think because of those facts, plus all the 1966 talk, I now think the football gods will advance the U.S. and Solvenia out of Group C.
Hey, Quigley. Enough with the sports talk. Give us some crossword stuff. Done and done: this article was brought to my attention recently, and it’s priceless.
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
Medium? Hardly! I had one of my fastest BEQ solves, and I’d never even heard of two of the theme people.
My husband disagrees with most of your Cup picks (as tweeted). His #1 and #2 picks for each group usually include an African team where one exists. Maybe I’ll fill out a bracket and pick the countries that are most friendly to crossword constructors. C’mon, Ghana gave the world KOFI ANNAN and ACCRA. Gotta pick Ghana.
The songs haven’t always been bad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uFWGALVF0Y
Was afraid, very afraid after a few “I don’t even have a good guess” clues…but came around. Medium’s a good call for me. Love the “I win.” Envious.
If it’s on ABC, she can watch on our TV.
Thank Christ!
Is is appropriate to trash talk with Liz via comments? No need. Your 2nd paragraph sums it up perfectly.
Favorite clue this time: 29D. Not fancy, but still awesome.
Hoping for a Slovenia vs Slovakia finals.
Been procrastinating about doing this puzzle… but never mind. Nice to be near the top end of the leaderboard, for once! And I’m not even really a big soccer fan, I guess I’m just kind of a lot more exposed than most of y’all…
Otherwise, really loved the entry BOXWINE and the tip of the hat to big soccer fan and music legend Bob Marley in your central entry. Is it Bob Marley song week? Two, with 1 day to go, might just be able to squeeze in another?
