PRINTOUT PUZZLE: [ THEMELESS MONDAY]

Rhetorical question that bears repeating: how on God’s green Earth were crosswords (especially hard ones) clued satisfactorily before Google? I mean, I remember doing them thataway, but Jeez, it’s a lot easier/more rewarding/etc. doing it with a search engine nowadays. Case in point, 2-Down. Q.E.D.
So, with summer and August winding down I just wanted to thank everybody for the support. It’s not too late to get in on this month’s drive. A small contribution to the tip jar of any amount ($10, $20, or $50) keeps BEQ.com running and keeps BEQ off the streets. Even if you can’t tip this month, you can help me immensely by telling, nay forcing, friends to come to the site. Eight-plus free BEQ puzzles a month? How can you beat that? You can’t, so don’t bother trying. Just tell your friends.
As always, one randomly selected donor will receive their choice of whatever they want from the BEQ Gift Shoppe.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
So much good stuff, but 17a has to go down as an all time favorite word whose meaning always escaped me.
Favorite clue: creep out.
This was easier than most hards for me. I’m sure my cockiness will be short-lived when the heavy hitters chime in with “Measy”!
The 54A/55D crossing was a WAG (Wild-a$$ed guess) but now that I know what 55D is, it’s a great clue!
Very tough. Blew it twice – two people I’d never heard of (DARA and LEMA) crossed with two words I didn’t know (PREXIES and RODOMONTADE). Despite the brilliance of the clues for WRESTLE, FLOAT and especially ICHOR, I can not forgive you for 2D. Dobie Gillis’ math professor? Fffffuuuuu!
Speaking of Google . . .
The only place I recall ever seeing “rodomontade” is in a double dactyl, and how would I ever have found it to share, without Google?
Higgledy piggeldy
Archangel Rafael,
Speaking of Satan’s re-
Bellion from God:
“Chap was decidedly
Tergiversational,
Given to lewdness and
Rodomontade.”
– Anthony Hecht
I’d call this one “Hugnutsinsane,” i.e., between “Hard” and “Bug nuts insane.”
My only prior encounter with RODOMONTADE was a few months ago in a Klahn? puzzle as a clue for BRAGGADOCIO. I knew I would be seeing it in another crossword at some point, but I assumed it would be part of another clue, not the answer. Once again, BEQ defies expectations.
Sheesh! RODOMONTADE. Good word. I had to get a lot of this puzzle through the crosses, but no naticks. I was sure someone would say is was an easy hard, because anytime I can finish a B.E.Q. HARD without help or mistakes, something’s fishy. Maybe I’m getting just a tad better. Still, I had no idea on the abbreviation at 56A. Likewise the answers to 48A, 54A, 61A, 62A.
This was a great puzzle.
I remember ‘Dobie Gillis’ pretty well, but the math professor? Really? Admit it: you were just being mean, because there are plenty of IMOGENEs out there to use instead.
Did not know HIGHLOWJACK, had guessed first REDS, then METS (obviously had the wrong sport, as well,) and pretty much ran aground to the point of taking OUT the correct HIRES at 1D So, had it all but the NW….so, not so hard except for the part where I couldn’t finish. Darn.
