If in the odd chance you missed Peter Wentz’s guest puzzle from last Friday, get thee to it.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
Wow, super hard, and then something happened around THE GAP (changing ACES to PEES) and then domino effect set in and I buzzsawed it. 13 minutes for first half, 3 for the second. Weeeeeird.
RANDY MOSS! Way to be topical. Sorry about your Pats. I (more than) feel your pain.
Just watched “Downfall,” after seeing so many of those Hitler parody scenes, which still crack me up…so 48A was first thing in the grid, followed immediately by 52A and 56A, so I was off and running in the SE. Still trying to parse the clue for 21D…
Good stuff as always.
Top half easy, bottom half … took a while. Finished with a letter wrong, realized I had LUCY instead of LUCI, don’t understand 21D either way.
The O in N_HOPERS was my last square. The only reference I’ve ever heard to that children’s game (“Ollie Ollie Oxen Free”) is in an REM song on Automatic for the People. Can’t remember which song–I think it’s the first one on the album.
I always thought it was MEDIVAC, not MEDEVAC.
David, Reggie Bush plays for the New Orleans Saints. I had PAINT for a few minutes, thinking you might paint Bush Intercontinental Airport.
Don’t get me started. Your Lions had those phony Jets on the ropes. Unbelievable. At least Thanksgiving is going to be boss.
Pretty much MARD on my scale, after letting go of Stonewall at 1A. Loved the clue for 45D. Still don’t get 46A.
Had _AN_YMO__ and thought did MANNY MOTA play football and baseball?
That was my first thought too – but it is MEDical EVACuation.
Thanks for the clarification on SAINTS. I was also confused.
@MitchS – The person being scammed is the “mark”.
I’m with you – also Mard. Seems like it’s been awhile since I’ve run across a real brain buster puzzle anywhere. Can I put in a request for one?
Uh oh. Gauntlet thrown. Woe betide (I have no idea what that means) us poor solvers.
“Saints” (21D) are the New Orleans Saints of the NFL. One of the players on the team is Reggie Bush.
I couldn’t let go of STONEWALL either. He’s my guy for good nicknames. I didn’t know the Bush/SAINTS connection either, thanks Dave. And I had in LIENEE instead of SIGNEE which threw me off at the end. Favorite clue was 6D, because I had WINGS there for so long.
Good roman numeral clue.
Always good when you sneak in a Beatles song.
