It was a joy to make this puzzle with Pat Blindauer, hopefully you feel it is a joy to solve it. In the odd chance that you’re not already a fan, go to Blindo’s website, will ya? His stuff is well worth your time.
Here’s something also well worth your time: this eye-opening exposé written by former New York Times employee Jim Horne. It certainly explains why there’ve been a lot Joe Krozel puzzles lately in the Times.
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
Man, 59A has got to be one of the most obscure actress clues that I’ve ever seen.
Really enjoyed this one, a solid medium.
I got a special benefit of being a BEQ subscriber on Stand Alone’s Crosswords app for the iPhone: The puzzle showed up on my phone last night so I finished the BEQ Thursday puzzle while the clock still read “Wednesday” 🙂
Slowed down by actor/actress names, so medium-hard for me. I have a technical objection to 57A: you can trip a breaker or blow a fuse, but you can’t trip a fuse. Says me, anyway. And I’ve dealt with my share of tripped breakers and blown fuses…
I would agree with David L. regarding fuses. They can be blown, while circuit breakers can be tripped. That tripped me up for a little bit.
But I loved this puzzle, which I’d rate medium-hard. And hey, Oreo in a clue instead of an answer!
Sir, it was indeed a joy to solve.
As José Feliciano says, Prosperous New Year!
Really enjoyed the puzzle! Wondered what the hell a EUSE was and how you trip it! Thanx!
There seemed to be a lot of ‘O’s in the puzzle for the hooks to catch on. Velcro?
Was JedI to this puzzle, a solid medium for me. Got the theme faster then I would have expected which made the going much easier. I really liked it, best puzzle I’ve done in a while.
THAN — it’s faster THAN, not then. (Sorry David, meds haven’t kicked in yet)
The line is “… swallowed the bait, hook, line, and sinker.” ALL FOUR ITEMS (ie, nouns) were swallowed, indicating an extreme triumph of subterfuge!!! ‘Hookline&sinker’ is NOT a stand-alone adverb, whether it is construed as ‘completely’ or not.
Nice puzzle, tho, BEQ! You do enjoyable work.
🙂
The thing with fuse is that whenever it says “corporate bigwig”, etc., you should not assume it will be CEO. There’ll be other answers like that in puzzles, where you can put in a few of the letters and wait. Actress Chandler? That’s usually “first name in cosmetics”. Dr. J must be famous for his hook shot? Medium-hard, but very rewarding
Excellent puzzle, but as an electrician, I agree with David L. and Matthew G. A FUSE will not trip. A devise that trips, has the capability of being reset. A basic fuse can only be replaced. That’s the simple explanation.
Medium-Hard for me. Took a lot longer that it should have to get PERJURE and the SW. I wasn’t expecting that last J in PLAYHOOKY. Happy New Year to all.
Do not agree with sandirhodes. It may (or may not) be true that “swallow the bait, hook, line and sinker” is the origin of the expression “hook, line and sinker.” What is undeniable is that “hook, line and sinker” has been in use as a distinct adverbial phrase for ages now, and in far more common use than the extended version.
And actually, when you really break it down, “hook, line and sinker” is grammatically separate from “bait” even in the original expression, because one is _expected_ to swallow the bait in general, such that swallowing it “hook, line and sinker” is the part that’s remarkable.
That’s my point! You don’t swallow ‘it’ hl&s, you swallow ‘it’ AND the hook AND the line AND the sinker.
I agree than language changes. No argument from me there. But this has been one of my peeves for a long time (probably proving YOUR point), so finally expressing myself about it has been therapeutic. 🙂
Personally, I really hate when the fish takes hook, (upon which the bait is ‘understood,’) line, and sinker, because even if you want to catch and release, the fish is probably going to die. It is really, really hard to get the hook out when it’s gone that far.
Loved the puzzle.
Hoping to hear about your journey!
