I know what you’re saying: “Hey, Quigley. Where’s the Valentine’s Day themed puzzle? Come to think of it, where’s the flowers? Shouldn’t that vase up above be brimming with roses? What gives?”
I hear your complaints. Let’s rectify the first problem with my latest Onion puzzle. Get it here: [Across Lite] [PDF]
As for the flowers, you’re on your own.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
It’s one week after I mentioned webcomics trivia, thinking “no way, too obscure even for BEQ,” and suddenly 54-Down on the Onion is HEY, WHADDAYAKNOW.
Nice work on both, although I normally hear SLUSHY, not SLOSHY.
Nice to see Peter Buck and Neil Peart mentioned in near consecutive puzzles. Referential treatment was how they did the lyrics (and that’s how James Joyce, TS Eliot, Pyncheon, Eco, etc. writes.) The same method was used in various Adult Swim Shows, MST3k, Dennis Miller rants, Quentin Tarantino movies. Naturally if you went for any of these, you probably were going to be doing crosswords.
Speaking of Rush, I never see Geddy ___ brought up. It used to be always Peggy Lee. Then Spike Lee. And of late Ang Lee. This has to be rectified. Geddy Lee participated on in over 8 top ten albums among other things. He’s not exactly obscure.
Can I buy a pant at the same store I buy a pajama?
I knew I had JIM Broadbent right, but I resisted and resisted trying PAJAMA
I BEEN HAD, I tellya!
Am I the only one that put in VIAGRA for 42-Down with complete confidence?
Sorry I’m late, but I couldn’t let this go by. This puzzle came together for me with 33A, which came to me with just UNC in that line. Dead cat bounce is such a descriptive phrase for a stock that you don’t want to touch. Love it – thanks, Brendan. Was this the seed entry?
I am guessing ANGRYBIRDS was the seed. I had a lot of trouble on the upper stacked 10s and couldn’t finish without G.
Favorite clue –Rice paper for PHD!
Tough one for me. A fair amount of stuff I’d never heard of… DEADCAT… FLAVORTEXT. Missed it by one square. The PEART/ADA cross did me in. Went with IDA thinking IDA Wong sounded familiar.
