Gotta throw this post up quick as I’ll be taking my talents to San Francisco this afternoon. Liz and I will be there for the week. Feel free to stalk us, if you find us.
So yeah, gotta pack, and among the many things I plan to bring for the flight is Francis Heaney’s latest book “Sudoku in Space.” It’s not unlike the capital-A Art that a genius like Thomas Snyder regularly puts out. All of Francis’s work are hand-made multi-colored grids employing brand new logic previously unused among sudoku, unless Thomas did it already. No matter. I loved the new logic which slowed me down. Sure, the, uh, “storylines” behind these puzzles seem a bit far fetched even for a Star Trek Convention (parallel worlds on a single sudoku grid? Riii-i-i-ight, Francis). It probably is worth mentioning that the book did line up quite nicely to “Dark Side of the Moon” if you started playing as you turn to page 16.
To get a sense of the work, Francis posted a few puzzles that didn’t make the cut here. Heads up: the post mentions a contest, which has already passed. Anyway, I just want to go on the record saying: thumbs up on the book, if you’re into the whole logic thing.
Okay, buy a copy of “Sudoku in Space.” Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
BAC!?
I liked this one, esp. the NW and SE—beautiful.

18:31 with one error (I had an H in box 46).
I ended up with errors in the SE, due to having CDRS (Commanders) at 50D, not knowing the 1st letter of 48D, and not knowing the jazz keyboardist at 47A – where MARC ended up fitting nicely.
Maybe MERL’s got a brother?
I couldnt read the clue ” borrow (—) ” easily. Is that word ” forever ” ? It looked blurred to me.
Anyway, I liked clue 1 across. The prodicient solver has to treat “duds” in a positive light as well as negative and in between.
Back to “Ulysses” : I had a copy on hand once and decided to open it up at random. The page I came across was a scientific description of water and all its properties. It just struck me as so funny and then I realized what ” Ulyssses ” was all about. JJ was being tongue way back in cheek.
Fun challenge! The last two themelesses have been tough for me. The SE was the last to fall for me here. Was on the right wavelength for 1-Across, as I immediately thought of COSTUME PARTY, but it didn’t fit. Good work as always.
Nice puzzle and about my usual time for a “hard” BEQ. But I Confidently put down DENVER for 42D and it was a while before I thought: Doh! Denver is the Queen City of the PLAINS–and I live in Denver!
Wrote in FASHIONWEEK right away, but quickly fixed it. At least I was close.
If I’d gotten 38D faster (duh), I probably would’ve made it through a lot easier. As was, I looked up a couple of the names in the SE to make sure they were right, but probably shouldn’t have bothered since I’d guessed them correctly. (Need to turn the confidence knob up a skosh.)
