Liz watched the Oscars last night, which meant that by extension, I watched the Oscars last night. I wouldn’t call myself a movie buff, but we did manage to see 6/10 Best Picture nominees. Anyway, the crossword nerd in me geeked out when all our old friends/tired crossword answers appeared in the “In Memorium” section (Robert Culp! Lena Horne!) as well as in the previously taped awards ceremony (Eli Wallach!). Gotta love it when we encounter our time-tested “crosswordese” in the real world.
Speaking of which, roughly a dozen or so years ago I was walking around NYC with a friend of mine and we almost collided with the aforementioned Eli Wallach who was standing next to Hume Cronyn. Worth mentioning only for the fact that my wannabe actor friend was dorking out to the fact that these two iconic actors were hanging out in Manhattan together, while I was dorking out that two iconic crossword fill celebrities were doing the same thing. Same planet different worlds.
Announcmenet: the new contest puzzle is up at the Visual Thesaurus here. After years of doing the word chains, me and my editor, the recently NYT-exiled Ben Zimmer, decided for a different approach this month. So if you haven’t done them in a while, please give it a shot. While you’re over there, you can continue reading Zim’s columns at the VT, until he gets a new home.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
Ya mean to tell me you can’t put “Anne Hathaway” in the same grid?
The Themeless Mondays are an integral part of my start-of-the-week nutritious breakfast. However, I’m compelled to call out 32A: there is no “key” for The Planets. It’s a seven-movement suite with lots of *different* keys, rather than one unifying one.
Hi there. Are there plans to collect your VT puzzles in a book some day?
This one was more up my alley. Props on putting LUIS Bunuel in a puzzle — one of my fav filmmakers. And it sure helped that I was watching Hannah and Her Sisters as I was doing this puzzle (no joke!), making 64 Across a gimme. Great movie.
Another great puzzle, sir.
Good to hear both POVs on actor names. And if you want to watch a shorter version of Colin Firth’s acceptance speech, you could try this bit of hilarity, I say humbly: http://t.co/S8ajVKa
FLEEBAGGERS. 😀
