To the mailbag. Looks like the old BEQ anthology is a must-pack for travelers. First up, my brother-in-law’s father-in-law, Stuart White of Bozeman, MT. Stuart writes:
Here I am in downtown Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Island, the Galapagos, getting a little advice from my new buddy the marine iguana as I work on a BEQ crossword. As an aside, I bought the Crossword All-Stars book specifically for this purpose, even though I had bought the book and done the puzzles a few years ago. This particular copy of the book I bought used, which, considering it’s a crossword puzzle book is a potentially risky thing to do.
It was long enough ago that I could do all the puzzles again with only an occasional sense of déjà fait.
Thanks, Stuart. Nothing warms my heart more to hear than to hear you bought the book twice. Ergo: twice as much royalties coming my way. Booyah. Even if it was used. Boo.
Not to be out done, sometime crossword constructor Holden Baker of Parts Unknown, also packed the All-Stars book for his trip. Take it away, Denny:
Had to send you this picture of me taken on Caye Caulker in Belize a couple of weeks ago. A great place, highly recommended. And a good supply of crosswords helps. FWIW, I think most of what you’re doing these days is much more fun and interesting than the NYT collection, which operates, as we all know, under lots of constraints. But I needed the book, because internet access in Belize is rather spotty and because I do my puzzles on paper and I couldn’t carry a printer with me while traveling, and I’m not willing to pay 50 cents per puzzle to print out our daily NYT, twice-a-week BEQ, and weekly Matt Gaffney.
It certainly would add up, if you’re an addict like the most of us.
Thanks again, Denny and Stuart. Keep the fan pics coming.
Have you entered the latest contest yet? Deadline is this Wednesday.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
Your brother-in-law’s father-in-law (we should have a word for that) bought that book specifically to read it to an iguana? Cool.
Egad! Did you make this one extra hard because we thought last week’s was relatively easy?
After zipping through the right half, I think I sprained something doing the rest- especially the NW. Ouch.
This was just delicioiusly hard, BEQman. Glad to have made it thru in about 20 min.
ADVILPM was beautiful. Enjoyed this puzzle a bunch. Great work.
Thinking you need a new category beyond Hard. Hardest BEQ (for me) in a good while – lots of names where I had No Idea. Mystery entry at 20A required some skillful guessing – worked out in the end.
Nice tough puzzle. I think I erased TALC about six times. Kept wanting BAIT.
