Quick notes on the puzzle, so if you’re interested in this sort of thing but don’t want any spoilers, come back a bit later. That said, no specific answers will be spoiled.
We’ve already covered this before, but to repeat, themeless puzzles always start with the seed entry. 17-Across was today’s seed. It didn’t yield anything interesting at 1-Across, or 15-Across, but was most successful at 17-Across. Once that was done, it was off to the SE. Now typically since themeless puzzles have four quadrants, I usually try and put a seed entry in each area before tackling the grid. 63-Across was the seed entry over here, and yes, it’s worth mentioning that I was foolish enough to try it out at 69-Across and 67-Across before finding what we have here.
What’s always fascinating to me is the accidentally interesting/quirky/weird/noteworthy/etc. answers that come up while trying to get a grid to work. In this instance: 69-Across. All the letters are edge-of-the-grid-friendly, and it’s something that people should know, if they don’t already know. Gotta love when that stuff comes up.
FWIW: I love the image presented in the clue for 40-Down. I think I’d probably pay upwards of $10 to see that.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
Why use ALMA Gluck when ALMA mater is available? (Especially crossing a name that isn’t Jimmy Wales, despite my efforts to make his name 11 letters long). Turn-of-the-century opera singers are never in my wheelhouse.
Other than that crossing, I liked this puzzle – challenging yet solvable. I never got stuck for long enough for me to want to put it away and come back later, but it wasn’t easy by any of my standards.
++ for NUNSENSE!
I’m doing this XWP at 12:15 in the early a.m. of Tuesday and my eyes are going nuts. had to take them off and look closely at the screen. The answer “sluicy”, BEQman, are you kidding?

Been waiting a day for an opp. to use the word SLUICY. No luck yet.
