ACROSS LITE PUZZLE: [ THEMELESS MONDAY]
PROGRAM: [Across Lite]
The weekend was spent in a bit of a cryptic haze. After demolishing Henry and Emily’s latest WSJ puzzle, I’ve been slowly poring over their book Random House Guide to Cryptic Crosswords. I used to have a copy, but I seem to have lost it in a move somewhere. My man Ross Beresford sent me another one (thanks, Ross) and so this past weekend was spent in awe watching the masters (Henry and Emily) do their thing again, and again and again so effortlessly.
I write this because I’m trying to polish up the arcane (at least in the U.S.) skill of cryptic clue writing. So, expect another block cryptic from me, … ooh, sort of soon, I’d think. It’s more than halfway good-to-amazing. Just needs that final oomph. I’m hoping to get it in decent shape before the little one arrives. (No news on that front, yet, but thanks for asking. You’ll hear about it here, for sure.)
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
Man, did I love this puzzle! Great stack answers, but my favorite has to the Bones line. Was looking, of course, for some form of “Dammit Jim, I’m a doctor, not some kind of…”
You on 9-Across?
And sweet puzzle btw!
Despite the acrid Dismal Swamp smoke and some vicious hornets looming over Noisfolk, this was a nice zonular XWP which simply means I’ll be working my you know what off. Don’t care. Got a lot of interesting cluing here and oc the 2 SQPDL clues. 20A Thot this was ELLS. I didn’t know Pachelbel was German. He is a 16A wonder. 47A I wondered who PNIN was. Now I know. 30D Thot this was IDO. But no. 3D First person to get the # put in so little into it and then died many years later. You have to put that into consideration. 2D Didja know that Eddie Murphy didn’t play the title role. He was a Detroit cop who was visiting BH. Awkward! 56A Some might object to this one. PiC. The nonant that gave me the most resistance was the 4th. What does 23D mean? Don’t get it. Thx for the 26D clue; it was cool. What’s my impression of the XWP? 27D.
I do 10-15 cryptics a week (I know, I’m slacking) and have considered setting them myself. If you need a sanity check on clues, I’d be glad to help.
I don’t suppose you want to hear about how one of my offspring arrived TWO WEEKS past the due date….
I don’t know what made me type in ANGRY BEE at at 56-Across.
