It goes without saying that the title of the posted puzzle has nothing to do with the photograph I ran. Though, to be fair, Thanksgiving would become only about 200% funnier if Merl Reagle suddenly was added to my family.
So why’d I run a picture of Merl today? Well, it seems the legend has finally made good on his promise that he would do a charity crossword puzzle contest. A promise that I’ve been hearing about since oh, about 1997. He’s called it The National Brain Game Challenge and all the proceeds go to benefit the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
On Sunday September 25 at 3 p.m. ET (I guess puzzle people aren’t football fans), you’ll receive four dailies by Merl, each of which has some sort of meta thing happening. I’ve been told they’re not crushingly difficult, basically, if you’re coming to BEQ.com, these puzzles are for you. Anyway, answers to those puzzles will lead you to some final final answer as well as the email address where you will have to send in that final final anwer. First person with the correct answer gets $5000. Second prize is a set of steak knives $1000. Third prize is you’re fired $500. Don’t worry if super speed solving isn’t your thing as there will be money prizes for other random place finishes, too, like 10th, 50th, etc. Anyway, you know Merl does some amazing work, and all the money goes to a worthy charity, so sign up for it already, will you? It’s only a measly $25! Sign up twice!
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
It didn’t seem too far fetched for a BEQ when I put in REWEED for Replace a joint….. Had to laugh when I couldn’t figure out why BULe wasn’t working.
I’m glad you said it, even if it goes without saying. For a moment there I thought your newborn daughter looks exactly like Merl Reagle.
You bet your Irene I’m not a football WACKO! But if you like SHOOTING footballs down like in SKEET, than I can be your fan.
Had never hear of Bo Kho nor the Persian word for ‘crown,’ so a Natick square. I decided ‘bo kho’ was a sloppy way to say ‘beaucoup,’ and tried SLEW. Close, but no cigar. Enjoyed the rest of the puzzle, except the part where I wanted Kublai KHAN where KANE was supposed to go…. Cute lil puzzle!
Thanks for the Binghamton reference (41A). Glad to know we’re on the map for something besides unrelenting ennui.
I spent last weekend in Binghamton. The ennui was relenting, but I was only visiting.
This one took me much longer than it should have because I was convinced 28A would begin with SI SENOR, and even after finishing I couldn’t see SI SI — I kept trying to figure out what a SIS I FORMATION was. Not knowing ERNANI was a huge problem.
Favorite theme entry was DAD-GUM SHOES. That put a huge grin on my face.
Really love the fact that you had SPAHN as an answer in Crossword #363… very apt!
