Like a migratory bird, I always seem to go back to the 3×7-intersecting-another-3×7 four corners themeless. I have no idea why that is. I’ve always found they’re quote-unquote “easy” to fill with punchy entries. Hopefully you agree with that assessment with this one. FWIW: my favorite answer is 8-Down. Favorite clue, 50-Down.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
This was “easy” to finish for a “Hard.” SW corner was roughest, with —DDLED keeping me frustrated for a bit. Thank god for useless academic terms cluttering up my head, because eventually, off the “P” in HAPS, I got A PRIORI. Then I tested TWADDLED and got WAR ROOM and it was all over (exc. BOOBIRD, which I couldn’t see only because I had a stupid typo in MERCEEES … *that* typo). Between the NYT applet and Black Ink and Puzzle Solver, I am always confused about how my cursor is going to respond in different situations, so I keep making stupid mistakes. Maybe it’s time to get back to paper, where only my horrible handwriting can trip me up.
Thx. I’m a BEQuiever.
Hilo is an island? Isn’t it a city on the island of Hawaii?
Man, this was a vicious BEQqer, I tellya. I’ll tolerate very hard but fair cluing but Idunno. #######What’s the 511 on 50D? Don’t get the Brown – wait, I think that means Brown University. Now that’s settled, what’s 62 across now? 17A Stan Lee created Thor? I thot some old Norse dude(s) did. 64A It was either gonna be family member or ice cream. 54A Thot this could be SWIG. I also thot Hilo was only a city and not an isle. I’m ok with the occasional error but yr. XWPs have got to be some of the hardest. Which means I’ll come knocking. C’mon now? 2D Like this legendary tale. 40D I was homing in on this answer but I decided to wait and see. I was right – with that THE as part of the answer.
I agree with Rex — either I’ve done enough BEQs to get in tune with your cluing, or this was really more easium. I finished before I figured out what 8D meant. Cute!
NW/NE/SE – Easium. SW – Hard. That was my experience, anyway. This pattern has become so common in BEQ.com themelesses—one portion of the puzzle significantly harder than the others—that it must be deliberate. Still, it’s foils me every time.
Xhosa made me think of Trevor Noah’s stand-up, which I was watching this PM. On playing cowboys as a kid: we got a Xhosa kid to be the horse. That man is not serious!
Fun puzzle: top two thirds v. easy. Bottom third was a letter by letter experience! 59D was sublime.
Love the cluing, but HAPS killed me ’cause it’s the token phrase in each BEQ that I’ve never heard of. Man, I’m losing touch :). And there’s a SMILEY for good measure to prove it.
Yes SW was tough. AURORAE held me back for quite a while. It was deciding that 41d had to be some kind of ROOM that let me finish. And, HILO is a city on the big island of Hawaii. Still, a fine challenge. This is why I look forward to Mondays.
ARI Berman was a student of mine! Some bright high school students wanted a programming course so they found someone to donate some used computers and found a room. All they needed was a teacher. One of their parents called me and I said why not. Ari was one of the students. Bill Clinton is probably used to knowing the people in crossword puzzles, I am not.
