It got pretty ugly around BEQ.com headquarters yesterday. After my sixth temper tantrum, I was finally talked off the ledge of our fourth floor window by Liz. You see, I take competitions really seriously, and yours truly just went 0-for-3 in the Orcas yesterday. The Orcas, ne the Oryxes, are not only an anagram of “The Oscars”, they are the year-end crossword awards given out over at Diary of a Crossword Fiend. Look, I’m a realist: as long as Patrick Berry is making puzzles, he’s going to be the puzzlemaker of the year. And, hey, I’ve said it before I’ll say it again: when I started off, I liberally ripped off Matt Gaffney, so the fact that he won big means I can liberally rip off some of his praise. Well, I’ll just get ’em next year. Congrats to all who won, and thanks for the nominations. Just call me the Peter O’Toole of crosswords.
Interested parties can read about the Orcas here. And do my puzzles that were nominated here, here, and here.
Also: the Visual Thesaurus contest puzzle is up early this month. Do it here.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
I think that 53A might be an early contender for the 2012 Orca clue of the year award with your one last week for “fengshui” also in the running.
Numbers and awards rarely tell the whole story in any human endeavor, brother. I enjoy solving (and blogging) your puzzle every week and so do a hell of a lot of other people; no mistaking a BEQ crossword.
Hang in there — not like you have any choice, since crossword writing is something you’ll be doing until they snatch the keyboard from your cold, dead hands! You’re a lifer and we both know it.
I’d be mighty suspicious of awards that keep changin’ their names. One day ORYX, next day ORCA, tomorrow probably ARLO. Plus, notice how their award name’s scrabbliness is going downhill. Meh.
FWIW, you were a grand prize co-winner in last week’s Fink-U-Freeky awards. Congrats. Let all those hundreds of losing constructors suck on that, for a while.
As soon as 6A is played out (like 10 minutes from now), BEQ can combine 25A and 18D for “An Austrio-Asian-American acting silly at The Garden”
Or perhaps not.
Having left the TV on tonight after watching 1G5G, I wound up seeing 53A while solving its clue. I definitely prefer the other show I was watching. 🙂
And dare I note that the captcha for my last comment was “gayeez”!
Isn’t that the Orca version of a BEQ n Tabitha pose?
Just do a little tummy time on the floor with Baby Tabitha and things will fall into perspective.
