The 36th annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament starts in a mere eight days. This one’s the biggie. The epic All-Star weekend of all things crosswords where superstar constructors mingle with superstar solvers. Where entire days are spent consuming puzzles and entire evenings are spent consuming beers and playing Peter Gordon’s Celebrity game. It’s also the weekend where Dan Feyer pockets $5000 either by winning the whole tournament or through extortion. This will be the seventeenth time I’ve gone to the ACPT, and once I finish building that time machine, I’ll go to the other nineteen. Don’t doubt me.
Looks like the list of constructors who will have puzzles in the tournament was leaked on Facebook last night, so here it is again: Crossword Jesus #1 Patrick Berry, Lollapuzzoola co-director Patrick Blindauer, my man Kevin Der, La Liz Gorski, La Lynn Lempel, the runner-up of the Ian Livengood lookalike contest Ian Livengood, Crossword Jesus #2 Mike Shenk, and yours truly. Should be a wonderful smorgasbord. So if you were thinking about coming, perhaps that list will be enough to convince you. (Full bios of the constructors are up on the ACPT site.)
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
IIs there an age category? I would like to compete but at 76 I can’t compete with the young guns.
Yes, Gerald.
In fact, you’re too young for the Seniors division, which is 80 and over.

There were 46 competitors over 70.

I hope to meet you there.
Rico Suave is most certainly NOT Hannah Montana’s friend; yes, they did go on a date once (in the episode “We’re All on This Date Toghether”), but that was only because Rico won the date at a charity auction, which Lola and Mike (Lilly’s and Oliver’s alter egos when they are with Hannah) tried to prevent so that Hannah could go out with Johnny Collins, the boy from her school that she had a crush on in the pilot (who had since moved away but returned for this one episode), but Rico was eventually able to match Johnny’s bid, and so the two were forced to share a date with Hannah (why they didn’t just go on two separate dates, I don’t know), which was inevitably ruined by Rico’s obnoxious behavior and contagious flu, which was given to him by Lilly via a kiss (she and Oliver were trying to get him sick so he would have to cancel, but he went anyway); other than that, the two have had virtually no interaction, except in “Hannah Montana to the Principal’s Office” when Miley has to enroll in high school as Hannah because she missed the deadline and Rico asks her in the hallway if she remembers him from the aforementioned date.
