Talk about your blasts from the past. David Steinberg brought this classic Games magazine article by Eric Albert on computer-assisted crossword construction to my attention this weekend. Albert, unfortunately, isn’t talked about too much nowadays, which is a shame because he was a true trailblazer back in the day. Not only with revolutionizing how computers can be used to make top-flight puzzles, but also with creating some truly jaw-dropping meta crosswords for the old Dell Champion magazine. He’s also a very engaging writer (check out this article about the MIT Puzzle Hunt when you have a chance, too). Glad to see this making the rounds again.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
Toughest in a while for me…NE took forever. Loved it.
With only the second “g” entered for 50A, I was sure you clued the HBO series BIG LOVE incorrectly.
Nice puzzle overall, and I can’t get enough of 52A. For a puzzle rated “Hard” I would have expected him to be clued a little more creatively.
Solved this one while listening to Blonde on Blonde. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Favorite entry = 14A. Favorite clue = 35D.
SARUMAN x TRUCKLE is terrible for those of us who have heard of neither (which is probably many). The U could literally be any vowel, and perhaps even Y.
