When people find out I write crossword puzzles, there’s an avalanche of questions that generally follow. Here’s a sampling with the stock answer: “How did you get into that line of work?” (“I didn’t go looking for this career, puzzlemaking found me”) “Do you know Will Shortz?” (“Who doesn’t?”) and “Is it okay if I say I want to kill you?” (“I know kung fu and I’m not afraid to use it”) And of course, there’s the classic: “Do you write the clues first or the grid?” We’ve covered that question many, many, many times before. But I’ll say this, today’s puzzle went title first, then theme, then grid, then clues. And scene.

This one reminds me why I contribute. Clever and funny.
Enjoyed as usual. Had a question re theme answers.
Is theme answer 51A consistent with those in 10A/20A and 39A?
Justine Henin and Cal Coolidge are names referred to in clues, with magi inside or at start of answer. 51A to be parallel should be KING KONG with magi attached. Hong Kong is not a gorilla. Am I missing something?
Did you know this before or after marriage, that is a relationship breaker my friend.
So Hong Kong IS a gorilla? I couldn’t find any gorilla named HK by searching.
Count me in with Martin as missing something. This thread really needs some resolution.
