THEMELESS MONDAY: [ ACROSS LITE][ PDF]
PROGRAMS: [Across Lite] [Adobe Reader]
PROGRAM: [Java]
If there was any doubt that last month was one of the highest-water marks in the illustrious career of the ole’ Biz Quig, I present to you Matt Gaffney’s nominees for Crossword of the Month, March 2014 edition. Count ’em, two puzzles by yours truly got the nod, and amazingly they were the first and last themes I pitched to Will Shortz for the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament in my role as the pinch-hitter for the #5 spot. The last theme is, duh, the one I made for the tournament this year (that’s me looking at the finished product at the ACPT flanked by my pals Ethan Friedman and Brian Cimmet). The first pitch, that Dubya Ess rejected, eventually found it’s home at the AVCX and now, the POTM winner. Amazing. I believe that’s a first to have one writer with two nominations. I look forward to duplicating this two nomination month achievement when Will asks me next year to write someting on such short notice. Still, it’s an honor to be acknowledged.
Oh, if you haven’t already, why don’tcha sign up for Patrick Blindauer’s latest Puzzlefest? It’s got a college theme this time, and since it’s by El Blindito you know it’s gonna be good. I’ve enjoyed what I’ve done so far. So what’s your excuse? Get it already.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
You deserve the awards!
Your clue reference to 39-Across should be 39-Down.
The clue for 19-Across is incorrect: That is NOT a line dance, it’s a progressive dance. Big difference.
Enjoyed 19- 22- and 38- across. Is 20- Down still a trend? Thought they were out by now.
Loved the puzzle that won POTM, great theme.
My wife and I just finished the “Draw Swords” puzzle this weekend. The moment of apprehension for the theme was really sweet. Way to go!
Good workout. Thanks for the puzzle.
Quigley you toot your own horn too much. You’re not that good.
Confirmed by many sites, e.g., http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Country-western_two-step .
Yeah, that’s right.
I’m taking to you!
A tough one for me, with more than a few self-directed “Duhs” once each entry was completed. But that’s what happens when you stay up too late, I guess.
