Slight spoiler in the post (not really, but there’s enough of a hint for sure), so let me give y’all the heads up now to avert your eyes. Here’s a good time to remind everyone that the June bonus drive is still chugging along. So if you’d like to support BEQ.com, and can tip at least $10, I’ll send you two never-before-published Sunday-sized puzzles as a thank you. And after that, if you still have a couple puzzle bucks in the wallet, please consider throwing a couple into Peter Gordon’s news crossword Kickstarter. Support some indie puzzlers, okay? Okay.
So, when Liz and I started getting serious, one of the things we bonded over was a big every-four-years Summer sporting event. You might have heard of it as it’s starting today. Truth be told, I’d watched a lot of the England matches with Liz back in 2002, as the Dubya Cee is a lot more interesting when you’re watching it with people with irrational rooting interests. But back in 06, Liz and I had started dating, and the thought of waking up at un-Godly hours to drink and watch sports, well, was frankly amazing. At the time, we couldn’t fathom getting up in the single digits (gasp!): Liz was nearing the tail end of her PhD program, I was doing band stuff full time. So that meant two people who (a) had tons of free time and (b) were night owls. So yeah, lining up to go to a bar at 8:00 seemed like a cruel form of torture for us. Nowadays, that would be called “starting late,” as Tabitha gets up in the fives. Good times.
So anyway, I’m looking forward to watching at the very least six games (hopefully more) to see how our respective home teams do. True story: last go-around, Liz was dumbstruck to see that I wasn’t rooting for England. You may recall that England and the US were in the same group, and we drew, which seemed like a big deal at the time. Anyway, different groups this year, so no cheering section conflicts that I can see. Also, I am looking forward to how Tabby describes the game. She used to call the NFL “men fall down shock,” but her vocabularly has become substantially more sophisticated since the fall. It’ll be interesting to see what she calls flopping. Hopefully it’s a good one.
