THEMELESS MONDAY: [ ACROSS LITE][ PDF]
PROGRAMS: [Across Lite] [Adobe Reader]
Who’s that studly member of the Bald Brotherhood lounging on that couch? Me, of course. And what’s sexier than yours truly? How about an advance copy of 2016’s puzzle book of the year? “Drunk Crosswords.” And I have no shame in saying it’s the book of the year, too. Don’t believe me? You’ve got until New Year’s Eve to publish one better. Anyway, it’s always fun taking a look back at some of my older work. And in this case “older” means “five months ago.” Anyway, pick yourselves up a copy, will ya?
Speaking of older BEQ puzzles, take a second out of your day and go support Lone Shark Games’s Humble Bundle. For a mere pittance (as little as $1!) you can get loadsapuzzles, and all the money goes to charity. You know I had to contribute puzzles to this project, and you should back it.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
I believe the Portuguese for seven is sete, not sette (55 across).
fun, but didn’t care for the spelling on 21A or 10D. unfortunately i finished there, so ended on a rather sour note after an otherwise good, mostly easy puzzle.
I’ll concur with chris, that using a “k” instead of a “c” is preferable in English for 21A, but then again the name in Icelandic is “Eiríkr”.
As for 10D, the Wikipedia article gives 6 or 7 different spellings including this one. It’s also used for the genus (and is in fact the French spelling), so it’s legit.
As for 55A, the clue uses the Italian names of the numbers and is correct as such. (Portuguese names for the numbers are três, quatro, and sete.)
I wasn’t sure the part of speech of the clue for 29D matched the answer. While one could read the clue as a gerund, it’s more natural to read it as an present participle, which then doesn’t match the noun answer.
Portuguese? In Italian it is “sette”. I was about to point out a grammatical error in that clue, which says “tre e quattro”. That little word “e” does mean “and”, but it is not used to express addition. The proper term would be “tre piu’ quattro”. Actually that word “piu'” should have the accent mark over the u, not after it, but I can’t do that with this program. One of its meanings is “plus”, which is the proper term to use for addition.
