Got my hands on my latest book “Octopus Crosswords” this week. Once again, it’s a nice attractive package from the geniuses at Puzzlewright. You might be asking, “what’s an octopus crossword?” They’re really Helter Skelter puzzles that, well, the marketing team thought might be a tough sell with that name. Fair enough, it’s a good compromise. Anyway, for those unfamiliar with the form, they’re mini 8×8 themelesses where the answers go in one long continuous line throughout the whole grid snaking in eight different directions. They’re not particularly back-breaking puzzles; I’d put them at a solid “easy” or “easy-medium” difficulty. I’m not quite sure how expert solvers might make things harder for themselves; downs-only is right out, that’s for sure. But, it’s a fun collection, and like I say in the introduction, this might make for a good “gateway drug” to the more adventurous variety puzzles out there. Pre-order two copies today to get that stereo solving experience.
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
I have no clue about the meta meaning of this puzzle. Any help out there? Except for the themed entries, I found it a medium-easy solve, so thanks for that.
it’s the choice (or)- between F or M in the first answer etc.
Took a bit, and checking the Crossword Fiend website. 17A female or male, ok. 33a kilo or grand for the $1000, ok. 47A took a while. False or true, ok. 54A C or D as grades, ok. But 24A, W or M – no clue! ironically.
Spoiler:
W or M: movie titles by their respective directors.
“W” is a film by Oliver Stone about GWB. “M” is a classic german film about a serial killer by Fritz Lang.
Question about the octopus crosswords: I’ve done the first few puzzles in there book and it seems there are some unchecked squares. Is that true or does it mean I’ve done something wrong?
