SPOILED: [ ACROSS LITE][ PDF]
PROGRAMS: [Across Lite] [Adobe Reader]
PROGRAMMING NOTE: No online solver today, I’m afraid. It’s .puz or PDF only because today’s offering is a diagramless. Thanks for understanding.
I should mention that this is a rerun of an old puzzle of mine today. Although, if you weren’t a diagramless subscriber from way back when, it’s a brand-spanking new crossword. Now, I get a lot of email wondering if diagramless puzzles will have a Phoenix-like rebirth from the ashes of “the Biz Quig ain’t making them anymore” dust pile. Fair question. And like I always say, never say never. Watch this space. So, here’s a bone throw to those folk.
Looking for more puzzles? The Hub Crossword (Sunday puzzles by me and Joon Pahk) and Marching Bands year eight has begun. So if that To Do list needs even more puzzles, you know what to do.
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
Thanks for posting this. I was very close to adding to your email pile wondering about finding more of these, since they’re so hard to find much less have a “Phoenix-like rebirth from the ashes”, and I have fun doing them. That said, should I want more than this one, what are my options?
That said, this particular puzzle has a certain feature I never ran into before (which is easy since I run into very many of these to begin with), so very far for a Medium.
Speaking of help and hints on doing these, there’s a pretty big hint in the PUZ file that you won’t see in the PDF if anyone is wanting to attempt this. I’d copy it here, but I don’t think there’s (SPOILER) capability for the comments.
I am drowning in mistakes. Starting box please?
I enjoy diagramless puzzles. Fortunately, this one was not difficult and didn’t need the solution. Not often the case.
Ha! I’m stuck at 18A, though got 24A, 25-28D. Hint?? Can’t move on until I get 18A.
That’s in the PUZ file, Sybil. I’d post to comments, but again not sure how to not “spoiler” anyone else wanting to try this that doesn’t want to know.
Whoo-hoo! Solved using the .puz file, tried that which must not be mentioned, and it was my fasted BEQ ever. Nice theme, too. Thanks, Brendan!
I’m usually a fan of your puzzles, but not this one.
I’m guessing the Mac/PC version of AcrossLite will let you do this? The iOS app version will not . . . .
This is not a comment on the puzzle (which I enjoyed BTW) but a complaint about the puzzle software. And it’s not just AcrossLite. Why oh why can’t someone figure out how to do a diagramless in software. All that would be needed is some combination of keys to make a square black and then toggle it back to white. I have complained about this to the NY Times on numerous occasions. It cannot be that hard!
I loved the puzzle. I would like more of them. For those of you looking for software I use Puzzazz and it does great for diagramless puzzles. It’s only available for iOS though, so you need an iPad or iPhone to use it.
