Breaking news from 2004: The mad lads and gals on a Discord channel dedicated to all things crosswords, have a space that is dedicated to identifying the crosswords that are used as props in movies and TV shows. And those sleuths have discovered that one of your boy’s puzzles in the New York Times was used in a Michael Mann movie called “Collateral.” The still frame above shows Renaissance Man Jamie Foxx working through my puzzle from 9/28/03. I have let it be known before that I’ve always wanted something like this to happen to me ever since I saw Paul Giamatti solve my man Alex Boisvert’s New York Times puzzle while driving a car (a move I used to employ, not anymore) in the movie “Sideways.” And now, here we are. Too bad nobody remembers “Collateral” nor my puzzle from 23 years ago. Anyway, carry on.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.

Very cool that your puzzle is a movie star. I peer hard at the tv screen whenever Stanley from The Office is doing a puzzle, but they are always discreetly folded. We can safely assume that if a puzzle is NSFW then it is probably one of yours, so I’ll keep looking. In the meantime, can you share the one from Collateral with us?
Great puzzle. Nice flow similar to a Weintraub Friday.
I went to the Times Crossword Puzzle archive and found it. It appears that it took me nearly 3 minutes longer than my Sunday average back then. I didn’t find your site until 2017.
Wait holy shit my crossword is in “Sideways”?!
No, that can’t be, “Sideways” predates my NYT debut
Wow! And thanks for the puzzle, Brendan…hope we get shoveled out soon!
I remember the movie and would love to solve the puzzle!
I remember “Collateral” fondly and have always thought of the puzzle as the third star of the movie.
