Last week I mentioned how there are times when the Crossword Muse spoke to me, screaming, “hey, dummy! Here’s a phrase that you can do something with to make a puzzle.” And as an exercise to the solvers, I opened it up to you. Just send me in a phrase and if the inspiration hit me, I’ll make a puzzle about it. In fact I didn’t want any theme answers, just the title. Silly contest, I know. But that didn’t stop a healthy 142 suggestions from coming my way. Here’s a sampling of the one’s that didn’t quite inspire me, but warranted a mention on the post
David DeHerder offered “That Would Be a Good Name For a Rock Band.” David knows me, I guess, because that’s a sentence I say pretty much daily. For those solvers who might be in a proggy stoner metal band without a name, may I suggest BIAS?
Carole Renaud either went topical, or was talking about her shy waiter, with her proposal: “My Server Will Remain Private.”
Kevin Slack suggested “Great Expectorations,” and I’ve had quite a few of those in my lifetime.
The most meta entry was Charles Montpetit’s ” “.
Of course, since the prize for the winning entry was either one of my books, or something that’s cluttering up my condo that I don’t want anymore, Kurt Krauss sent in “Junk Dealer.”
Friend to BEQ.com Ross Beresford gave me a monster suggestion, but it would be much better as a seed answer in a future Themeless. So thanks there, Ross.
And finally, crossword constructor extraordinaire Byron Walden sent me a title with a ready-made theme … alas I’d already made that puzzle. Byron, you haven’t been paying attention!
Ladies and gentlemen, our winner is Jim Curran of Chatham, MA. Fun fact: Two people named Jim Curran entered the contest. How often does that happen? Anyway, Chatham Jim’s suggestion is … Well, wait for it. It’s coming up, soon.
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
How can “we’re not gonna take it” singer be anyone by Roger Daltrey?
Fun puzzle. One of my favorite comics. i thought the 39D/58A cross was poorly clued — at least to one who is rap & actor ignorant. You really needed to avoid the island when there was so much other simple stuff in the grid?
BEQ – somehow I thought my Muse Contest entry might A-muse you.
Thanks…. Jim Curran
Ditto 46D/ 60A, although at least I could get “dee” from the comic.
And, btw, I highly recommend “what if” by Randall Munroe.
There are two well-known songs called We’re Not Gonna Take It, but years apart. Funny, though, I didn’t know Brendan was into ha- no, that might give it away.
