BATTLE OF THE BANDS:
[ ACROSS LITE][ PDF]
PROGRAMS: [Across Lite] [Adobe Reader]
To turn a phrase from the immortal movie “WarGames,” “The only way to win a battle the bands is not to play.” Or, you know, actually win the thing. Competition aside, today’s offering is somewhat reminiscent of this classic from the old days when the Onion ran a puzzle. Like I’ve said before, when you rip yourself it’s called style. Come on. Who the hell else is going to do something like this? Do you think Patrick Berry’s going to reference any of these bands in his work? Yeah, of course not. And that’s why you love me.
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
One characteristic of genius is recognizability. If the constructor’s name had been hidden I’d have instantly known this was a Qthulhu puzzle. And one of the better ones, at that.
Very minor quibble on a fun puzzle: is 46A actually kosher, with the clue and answer containing abbreviations for the same word?
