Flashback today. All the way back to the first year of the blog, some five years ago, almost. Crazy to think I’ve been doing this for five years. Here’s to fifty more. Anyway, this puzzle was in response to a similarly wide-open Matt Jones themeless that he’d run in his indie syndicate at the time. Mine, I feel, is noteworthy for the 6×6 chunk of white in the middle as well as the stacked 4s in the corners. Maybe when I have more time on my hands I’ll try something like this again. That might be in twentyish years, methinks. Enjoy.
Oh yeah, I got a copy of my latest book this weekend. It’s a collection of 42 mini-Marching Bands puzzles. I say mini because the grids are 11x instead of the more common 13x puzzles. No matter, this book is one of my best. Here is a sample of the mini version. Basically, if you’re a fan of this site and love the Themeless Mondays, this book is for you. If you have a spare $6 burning a hole in your pocket, please consider pre-ordering a copy, will ya? Thanks
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
Some younger solvers might need a Time Machine to get 59A
great puzzle, but ARBITRAGE really isn’t market manipulation in the slightest… it’s a well-recognized (and legal) means of profiting from mis-priced assets…
Kind of a double nostalgia trip, this one, since it’s not only an oldie/goodie but has a bunch of references of personal significance for me. For 36A, you could add somewhat lesser known Clint Conley of Mission of Burma (Moby did a cover of his “That’s When I Reach for My Revolver”), the lesser lesser-known but musically significant Jeff Connolly (aka MonoMan) of the redoubtable Boston garage band The Lyres, both of ’em guys I played in bands with and still know. Gus I knew through his younger sister. I assume Clint knows Moby though he was several years younger than us and I never crossed paths with him. He did live down the street from me I gather. And 60A was another gimme and delight, since Television was one of the bands around the NY scene that we were all listening to and taking inspiration from back then.
Definitely an enjoyable “flashback” all around–thanks!
It is to laugh: your “nostalgia” is so far after my time that I have to guess and hope. Best.
What happened to the list of times? I always enjoyed seeing how much slower I was than others.
Somehow I spent a while convinced that Television must have had a song called STENO POOL…
SE was atrocious.
You are simply a god when it comes to fresh clues and cool answers. This was a terrific puzzle, B.
Agreed on the quality of the puzzle, though the lower left was really the only obstacle and the rest wasn’t exactly “hard”, particularly if you happened to know 23A. Still, love the Monday puzzle as always, really great resource that makes the week less of a waiting game! Thanks BEQ!
