A lonely triple stack. This grid pattern screams mid-to-late ’90s to me. Back then these stunt grids were mostly done by hand and they were damned impressive feats. Nowadays, with software-aided construction the triple stacks are demonstratively easier to make. We’re likely to see multiple triple stacks in a puzzle to try and make them more interesting. But yeah, anyway, this grid’s a real throwback to when this stunt really looked like something. So let’s get our mismatched flannel on and put on some Wu-Tang and start that ’90s revival already.
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
Nice one, as usual. One nit to pick. The Civil Rights leader is Medgar Evers. If you want to clue EVANS, you should be referencing the gaffe, not the leader (“Name in a 8/12/13 Clinton gaffe” seems more accurate to me than “Leader in a 8/12…) . Also, the gaffed name is Medger Evans; if you’re going to put the botched last name in the grid, you should probably put the botched first name in the clue.
I did some work at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn a while back, so the name is pretty salient to me.
I wasn’t sure what to put for 7D either, but given that there’s only one three-letter ambient music guy out there that I know of (20A) I was able to narrow it down. Also, I wouldn’t recommend hitting a nail with the peen-end of a hammer since it’s primarily used to shape metal. Great puzzle. Squee!
Jenny,
The clue reads [Civil rights Medgar in a 8/12/13 Hillary Clinton gaffe]. It was HRC who got his name wrong, not BEQ. 😉
A flat head on a hammer (for hammering nails) is a peen. The other side of the head may have a ball peen, or it may have a claw. A ball peen hammer with a claw would just be silly.
This dorky grandma enjoys trying your puzzles, which are always a challenge because of the pop culture references. For this one, I was happy to know TWERK (thanks to the recent “scandal”), SQUEE, and INSTAGRAM; and the music references were gettable from crosses. However, DNF – just couldn’t see the ZONE_/A_S cross. Fun! Thanks.
Yes, Tuning, I know. There’s a civil rights leader Medgar Evers, and there is a gaffe that HRC made, Medger Evans. The clue references Medgar Evans, who is neither a civil rights leader, nor the gaffe that HRC made.
The NYT has killed off any interest I had in triple or quad stack puzzles. This one is good, but, yeah, it does feel dated.
squee x bqe = dnf. Tempted to call “Natick” but it looks like squee is a thing.
