THEMELESS MONDAY: [ ACROSS LITE][ PDF]
PROGRAMS: [Across Lite] [Adobe Reader]
PROGRAM: [Java]
Seems like now’s as good a time as any to announce that I’m writing a book of Marching Bands puzzles. I’m closing in on the halfway mark, and let me tell you this one’s going to be a lot of fun. Basically they’re all themeless puzzles wherein I try and cram as much eye-popping stuff in there as humanly possible. It’s especially fun when I can get a long band answer that turns two corners, so that means the checking goes in three directions: overlapping at the top, normal crossword checking when it goes down, then in reverse along the bottom. If you enjoy this book 1/8th as much as I’m enjoying making it, it’s going to be a winner. If you’d like to do some old Marching Bands, here’s four of them. Oh, did I mention the puzzles in this book will be a smidge smaller? I guess I didn’t. They’ll look more like this one.
Anyway, I’ve been having so much fun with these that I’m having a little difficulty finding new seed entries for the Monday puzzles, but I think you’ll see that this one packs a punch.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
Typo in the PUZ link on Bawdy.
This one’s an instant classic, I tell ya! 1st, 2nd, and 4th enneants had me stumped (what is the origin of that slang phrase.) Anyway survived it gleefully in 27 min. with one error. When it comes to military related clues, I think i’d automatically get them all with no probs (Army 1985-1989). 17D was mil. related, but I’d be thinking personnel. 19A Thot __OLIVEOIL__ or somewhere in the Puzo area. 15A Sports clues are the thing that worry me the most. Thanks to this, I’d think I’d never get through. But I know the name Boomer ESIASON. 1A Thot IRS____. Then YESBACK. 6D thot this was ________NIST. This answer was going to break me through to success. 16A Q to myself: “Do you know who wrote or created the original?” Got to find out before it pops up in the XWPs or Jeopardy. & Plz, no marching bands at the ACPT. Gotta be Cheerleaders. They are prostitutes in essence cuz when the game’s over, winner takes all. I did beat Camille Paglia to this, right?
I’m late with a comment, but I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy the Marching Band puzzles. I look forward to the book.
Well, we’re BIG fans of marching bands, so we’ll look forward to that! (Check out our all-adult The Beat Goes On Marching Band at http://www.tbgo.org)
Thanks for this puzzle, Brendan. It was challenging but clever and fair and therefore repaid the effort it took to solve it.
