Tip of the hat to Crossword Jesus Patrick Berry for steering me away from a much more ridiculous idea for a puzzle to the one I ended up with today. Will his wonders never cease? Let’s hope not.
So, earlier this year, Liz and I had decided we were going to watch all the films on the British Film Institute’s Greatest Films poll. I’ll be the first to say I’m film-illiterate, so I hadn’t heard of most of those films on that list. Liz had seen very few as well. So far, we’ve managed to just see one, “Citizen Kane.” First time for her; well over a decade since I saw it last. “Vertigo” will be next whenever we have a couple of hours to spare (also first time for Liz, whereas I saw it last, oh, about 15 years ago). And after looking at my calendar, the next open date appears to be sometime in July 2015. I think that this film project has shades of my other pet project of finishing all those difficult books that I know I’ll never get around to. But we live in constant hope. I’d like to add that Liz would rather get extensive dental work without Novocaine than watch “2001,” so that one’s going to be a tough sell. And as for me, frankly, it’s next-to-impossible to take lists like these seriously when there’s not one Spielberg movie on them. Hey, but maybe that’s why I’m film-illiterate.
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
there are some parts of 2001 that are really beautiful – especially the scene set to the blue danube waltz i know now it’s not that spectacular but, when i saw it in 1968 – i’m old – it was amazing.
Last time I saw 2001 was in 70mm at Ebertfest (gosh, might’ve been the first one of those). Bigger is better. Unless you have a wall-sized TV (like I do), the last half hour (“Beyond the Infinite”) will probably put you to sleep. Might anyway.
Once the endless kaleidoscope starts, you can probably fast forward through that. Sacrilege, I know, but if it makes the rest of the movie (which has a lot of good stuff in it) accessible to you, go for it.

How on earth did you decide on a grid for this one? Generally grids are constrained by theme, but the theme is all over the place here. What went into the grid-making process?
You need a different clue for 46A OAR. A kayak is propelled by a paddle, not an oar.
