It’s awards season, and crosswords are no exception. Why this very blog has already taken an Oryx, the year-end accolade awarded by crossword bloggers Amy Reynaldo (mostly) and Rex Parker (occasionally). Well, what do we have here? Looks like the ole’ Biz Quig is up for another Oryx. Specifically, my “Raising Your Spirits” in up for the Crossword of the Year. Stiff competition in there, though if asked I’d say the favorite out of the bunch has to be El Blindito’s “Making Faces.” One of those themes that I’d wished I’d thought of. But hey, it’s an honor to be nominated. I’d like to think of myself as the “Moneyball” of puzzledom, both in terms of the Billy Beane practice, and the movie that’s been nominated for a bunch of stuff that has zero chance of winning.
The awards will be given out this Sunday. No doubt EW.com will be live blogging the awards.
Also, for those who missed, I wrote a Marching Bands for the New York Times yesterday. You can do it here. Regulars of this site know that I really like my Marching Band puzzles. Hopefully you do too.
Share the puzzle. New one here.
Where’s the roll call-thingy? well, anyway I did this in somewhere like 12 minutes. + If this was not a classic XWP from the archives then I’d have to say that this was smoother gliding than most.
More excellent than usual. Except for LANA DEL REY (whose name I could only surmise through the crossings), everything was deliciously challenging. Ended in the northeast corner at the W. 14:49.
On the easy side except for Del/aDs cross. Fave clue: evening drive.
Had GALA for the fundraiser, then THE HOYAS for the team. Had to Google the LANA lady whom I had not heard of to open things up. I too liked Evening Drive. Thanks for the Marching Bands link; I love those.
I often get in trouble working from the bottom to the top, but this time it really got me…
SEAHAWKS? Nope.
JAYHAWKS? Nope.
THE HAWKS? Ahhh, just right!
I liked this puzzle much more than Lana Del Rey. And that’s all I’ll say here. Except you’d also be better on SNL.
Love the Marching Bands. Are the solutions available?
What is “tenk?” Could find no reference.
