ACROSS LITE PUZZLE: [ THEMELESS MONDAY]
PROGRAM: [Across Lite]
The seed entry (1-Across) was the result of a lost bet over the outcome of last week’s Patriots/Steelers game. My team lost, but good, and as part of the bet, I had to put 1-Across in a puzzle. Can’t stand that song, especially since it reps Pittsburgh. But, then again, I do like 1-Across as a crossword entry. Even if the Pats whupped the Steelers, I probably would have made this puzzle anyway. Those letters are too enticing.
And no, I didn’t make any dumb bets about yesterday’s Pats/Giants game. And don’t ask me about the game either. I’m not happy right now.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
44 days till the Precentennial. Also 100 years of the XWP. And not to mention doomsday later on in the year. ~~~~~~~~~Now 1A had some interesting letter configuration, but like I said before sports (16A,42A), rap (1A,25A), and electronic terms are my MISTLETOE. Now I must add REALITY TV (50D). WWTBAMillionaire on Facebook keeps bringing up questions of RTV, rap, sports, electronic terms, sports, ad nauseam. Je suis un classicist, fer crying out loud! 55A Hector sounds like heckle and that’s why we use it in a negative connotation. In the Iliad, he was a postitively limned character. Think it’s time to ban this use. 67A Haven’t seen this on tv in a long time. James Randi knew how to do it and explained how it works. A FE actually doesn’t ingest the fire; he coats his lips with some lubricant and it looks like he’s spewing out fire. Takes years of practice, DON’T GO TRYING THIS ANYWHERE, folx. 29A Don’t understand this one, BEQman. 30D I like these clues where the answer gets “interpreted”. Lots of Native American influence out there.““In conclusion, had the feeling I’d be stumped on this one in several parts, but everything turned out well.
That was fast for me on a Monday hard. Liked 36D clue. And the triple stack at the bottom gave me a chuckle.
What the hell’s a GERT?
Nice puzzle.

This was one where I went through the whole puzzle several times, turning up an odd word here or there, and then made a small inroad, and built on that — and checked (& revealed a few letter) — and then finished. Exactly why I love your puzzles.
We arranged my brother-in-law’s 70th b’day party yesterday around the Patriots game —
@ Rex – Gret Frobe is the actor who played the clue-specified villain in some James Bond movie.
Regarding 1A – I can’t stand rap “music” (always remember, kids, you can’t spell CRAP without RAP) so I don’t know if the song’s lyrics are Steeler-specific, but you could always think of the black and yellow as being the colors of the Boston Bruins, 2011 Stanley Cup Champions in the NHL, if that makes you feel any better.
Replying to self, yes, I know, very bad! Just wanted to fix my typo of “GRET.” Obviously, we all know I meant to type “GERT” as that was what Rex was inquiring about.
It must be Monday…
Grrr. Threw in WIZKHALIFA confidently, then fought for most of the rest of it.
Very tough but ultimately doable. 1a was a complete WTF. Lotsa staring and write overs. So, Rex is right, nice puzzle!
