It’s an oldie but goodie today from the (ancient? halcyon?) days a.k.a. “The Time Out New York” era. It’s probably more of a measium than a full blown medium. I should make those new rankings at some point. Anyway, enjoy.
More than a few people have emailed me asking: “How’s Tabitha doing?” Well, let me tell you, she’s doing amazing. How about a cute story? So, Liz was looking through one of her umpteen books about newborns and she reads that the easiest thing for lil’ Tabs to focus on would be pictures of high contrast. That is to say, things in black and white. Well. Well. Well. It didn’t take very long before I produced a perfect example of a black and white picture to put in front of her face … that’s right, a crossword puzzle. I snapped the above shot of Liz showing Tabby some puzzles and yeah, that agape expression on her face is not boredom. It’s not yawning. And she’s certainly not taking a deep breath. She was capital M-Mesmerized. And just to prove it wasn’t a fluke: she recently noticed that we have a couple of Emily Jo Cureton’s pictures hanging above Tabby’s co-sleeper … and Tabitha has been mesmerized by them as well.
Here’s hoping we’ve got a budding puzzlehead.
Quick side bar: my buddy Joon has been ripping it up on “Jeopardy!” Especially impressive was his work on Tuesday’s Double Jeopardy! round (watch it here). So if you’re interested in that sort of thing, you should check him out tonight. And while we’re at it, check out his guest puzzle he made a while back.
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
Baby’s first crossword! That’s terribly adorable. And of course, babies need standard grids, not kid stuff. The patterns are more eye-catching and work their brains better.
I think Emily Jo needs to make a board book of her crossword art.
Tabitha has so much personality it’s wasted. It’s really been kind of hard to take a bad photo of her.
And yeah, Emily Jo should do a book (board or otherwise). She did so many great pictures.
Great story about Tabitha. Thank you!!! And thank you for posting a link to Joon’s Jeopardy appearances.
This puzzle was creepy in sync with the last couple of days of my life. Got together with daughter and her boyfriend and enjoyed takeout Chinese food…complete with fortune cookies. Then we played Cranium 2 and learned what the Nepal flag looks like. And btw, am a graduate of Drew U. Yikes!
Fun puzzle that definitely flows like a very easy.
Harder for me than some Hards. Fill, that is, not theme. NE was the real bear, not having any idea on the top two across.
It’s almost presumptuous, but I find myself rooting for Joon on a gut level that feels just like rooting for a friend.
I vote for at least one Tabitha story per puzzle post.
There is an Emily Jo Cureton in Marfa,Texas working as a reporter for a local newspaper/website. Is this the same person as the crossword artist? How does one get from NYC to Marfa?
FWIW, the puzzle that Tabitha is looking at is puzzle 75, “Just Give Me a Book” in “The Penguin Classics Crossword Puzzles” edit by Ben Tausig.
This is blatant product placement.
C’mon now! That was the nearest puzzle when the Great Unveiling took place!
