Gosh, breezed right through that one- filled it in top to bottom on my first pass. Either it was easy or my mojo’s in high gear.
[3-D area for military brass?] = THE DODECAHEDRON would have been awesome. At least for a nerd like me.
I love the XWPs by BEQ, but every once in a while I’ll come across a clue that looks too smudgy. For this one, it was the last clue ending in “id”. I looked real hard and realized the first part was “W9”. Still it’s a rarity I come across. I’m surprised you took an objective approach to “Mr. Slate”. “Dodecahedron” was one of the Platonic Solids, yes?
The Ackpit was awesome! Will Shortz is the only man for running it. The “American Crossword Puzzle Tournament” was heard by me about 3 or 4 times, so why not resort to using its interesting acronym.
