Good Super Bowl for all the Green Bay fans as well as residents of Milledgville, Georgia. Right?
Anyway, about this puzzle: Ya gotta love grids where the seed entry is a 14-letter entry. In the above grid, I threw it in 19-Across, and was pretty pleased about flanking it with winners at 7-Down and 29-Across. Naturally, 48-Across came next, and by then it was pretty much a fun run to the finish line. Cluing felt pretty good. Glad to find the factoid at 37-Across. Liked the misdirection at 43-Down. Loved the quote at 55-Across. And … scene.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
I had a lot of trouble with this one. Maybe it’s just a case of the Mondays. Took awhile to get 17A, but the other long ones were OK. Bottom went well, but ended up at the NW and drawing a blank on VICE (had the COP) part until I got CENTER. Then it all came together.
This was actually my fastest BEQ Themeless performance, largely because I threw down NBC UNIVERSAL and HOPE ARKANSAS in the opening seconds, followed shortly by PETER BUCK. INTERNET FAMOUS and SPUTNIK MOMENTS took me a bit longer, but the Down clues were pretty easy today and got things squared away.
Maybe this was MARD, because I got it w/o using the check/cheater button. But it’s one of of favorite BEQ’s in recent memory…(and that’s a high bar to get over!)
I can’t believe my brain coughed up Peter Buck! How long has it been since I’ve heard his name? Nice puzzle. I thought I might have to cheat on this one, but instead hung in there and managed to solve it after all.
@Hollie: I, ironically, had a lengthy conversation about Peter Buck on Sunday, because he was a guest musician on the new album by The Decemberists, which was conceived in part as a tribute to R.E.M. So it was a funny coincidence to see him show up here the next day.
The mention of Its the end of the world was stupendous what with the method it was done in : Referential Treatment. “Sputnik moments” was the dumbest thing I have ever heard a politician say. You have to understand the tenor of the times. Well I guess I’m saying is that USA has its share of “Sputnik Wonders”. May have a few more up its sleeve.
This one’s up there with some of your best. I needed the crosses to get PETERBUCK (after my time?) but I dredged up BRASSRAT from a NYT a while back. Plus, I’ve seen Huckabee interviewed often enough so that 37a was a gimmie. Nice work out.
