PRINTOUT PUZZLE: [ FROM A TO Z]
PROGRAM: [Adobe Acrobat]
Heads up: variety puzzle today so there won’t be a Java or an Across Lite file. All you can do is print this baby out. Tip of the hat to Will Shortz who came up with this form.
Oh, you were wondering about the results of the contest?
Solvers of last Thursday’s puzzle found the following riddle: THE LAST NAME OF / WHAT VP SPANS THE / FULL NAME OF THE / PRESIDENT UNDER / WHICH HE SERVED? The veep in question was none other than Hannibal Hamlin, Abraham Lincoln’s first vice president. You might have heard of his other one, some Andrew Johnson guy. Our contest this go around set the new high water mark for entries at 126, 111 of those being correct.
Some weird interpretation of the question led more than a few of those incorrect answers to say Jefferson spanned, that is too say, ran longer than, the name of his President: John Adams. And I should say that few cried foul that the riddle should have said WHOM instead of WHICH. What can I say? I speak English like it’s a foreign language.
As is the case with all BEQ.com contests, we have two winners: one randomly selected winner and the most creative entry. Let’s start with the latter. Sadly, there were no pizzas delivered with the answer this time around. No skywriters. No mysterious notes sent to me via singing telegrams. Nothing really out of the ordinary. What happened? Is it the summer? Are you all just not feeling very creative? Admittedly, I wasn’t giving you much to work with with ole’ Hannibal Hamlin. Don’t let me down next time, you hear?
Our creative winner this time goes to Brendan Kelly of Parts Unknown who sent the above doctored portrait which made me laugh. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that Hannibal Hamlin did ask to be my Facebook friend and Twitter follower. Cute stuff Eric Maddy and Sarah Morayati, respectively.
Our contest winner is Jerry aka “Mayven46” also of Parts Unknown (I don’t think that’s your real last name, but that’s what yr. e-mail said. Update to follow.) Congrats to Brendan and Jerry who will get whatever they want from the BEQ Gift Shoppe. Thanks to all who competed.
If you didn’t win this time, would still like some free stuff from the Gift Shoppe, and enjoyed the puzzles this past month (lots of qualifiers, I know), please consider hitting up the tip jar. A small donation of any amount ($10, $20, $50) goes a long way to keeping this site running smoothly. And as always, I will give one randomly selected donor whatever they want from the BEQ Gift Shoppe as a thank you.
UPDATE: New Visual Thesaurus puzzle up. Clicky clicky.
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
pwned.
That was quite fun.
Fine and fun except for ?ena’s weapon, which was a total WTF for me, even after I consulted my assistant Mr Google.
I was going to do something with the Port of Boston, where he was apparently collector of customs, but couldn’t think of anything realistically doable from elsewhere.
Got everything but GQ _Y_E. Can’t figure out how to see the solution. Help? Thanx, MK
G.Q. Type and Chakram were not going to happen for me without crosses. Ended up googling them.
Wanted “R-Rated, at times” to be Kinky and “Tightly curled, like an afro” to be Ebonic.
Ditto re: CHAKRAM…it aint gonna happen for me without crosses.
Is 20-down MYJOB? Perhaps this a not-so-subtle reminder about the tip jar…
Dude, CHAKRAM is complete B.S. in a puzzle w/ unchecked letters. Did no one test this??? I mean, it’s a fun little puzzle otherwise.
We have a winner!
Yeah, but come on. I had to something with that X clue.
PeteRimkus: I think it’s McJob – as in flipping burgers ain’t no career path!
Can we all post our times for how long we stood looking at C-A-R-M before Googling?
Yeah what he said about CHAKRAM, I also didn’t know Mr. ZIMMER. I enjoyed the concept quite a bit.
Nice puzzle! Last one in was MCJOB if you don’t count CHAK-whatever. But I’ll know it next time!
CHAKRAM was a gimme for me, which is nice since many times things that are in other peoples wheelhouse are unknown to me. Puzzles are fun like that.
Nice puzzle, Brendan! Enjoyed it a lot with one gripe: How does G.Q. TYPE qualify as “2 wds.”? Last time I checked, GQ was not a word. Methinks the clue was a little misleading, no?
Googles for ZIMMER and CHAKRAM but still flummoxed at 13-A. “Zapatistas, e.g.” = EROTIC or EXOTIC ?
I had “rebels” for “Zapatistas” and “erotic” for “R-rated at times”
my fault, maybe. in the original it said “3 wds” but i kinda feel like it’s two and suggested the change. i mean, i would never write it as G Q type or even G.Q. type. it’s GQ type. but maybe it’s 3. i dunno.
It’s not you, it’s me. I don’t like variety puzzles for the same reason I don’t like first-person shooters – I’m bad at them. I mixed up the R and the Z which led to trying to get some sort of hip-hop thing for Rapatistas. Doh! Plus I haven’t read On Language since William Safire died. Me, I spell it yadda, but whatever. Having true nerd cred, chakram was easy for me due to both Xena and Axel.
Awesome.
