PRINTOUT PUZZLE: [ THEMELESS MONDAY]
PROGRAM: [Adobe Acrobat]
It’s not too late to enter the contest from last Thursday. Deadline is Wednesday the 25th around my bed time. And if you have to ask when that might be, you’ll never know. So get it in early. Or guess early. Or whatever.
Speaking of Wednesday: my band the Boston Typewriter Orchestra is playing Club Passim in Harvard Square that night. Stalkers, take note and come on by. You can hear our latest single here.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday (with contest results!).
The NW was so easy that I was thinking the HARD rating was going to be some sort reveal in the puzzle. Then things got weird, didn’t they? Had all but the SW and just caved. Kinda glad I did. Too much that I just didn’t know. Elrushbo? Gawd. Someone needs to get over himself.
Lost some time thinking Ms Pacman instead of Jr, but then it fell into place. Never thought of kale as a color, though, but I guess it is. Not bad for a Monday.
Oregano is not a spice: it’s an herb. Cayenne pepper, e.g., is a spice. Nice otherwise.
Nice puzzle.
Why is “one inch” a “dusting measurement”. Does this refer to a dusting of snow. If so, one inch seems like a lot.
Calling oregano a spice is a common error. Here’s the distinction: We use the leaf of the plant, so it is an herb. Mustard, pepper and many other flavorings come from seeds; they are spices.
BEQ is a Boston guy. One inch is a dusting to him. Down here in the DC area, it’s a blizzard — schools close, govt shuts down.
(I didn’t understand that clue either).
I also had Ms. PacMan instead of Jr. and I have no doubt that BEQ knew we would all do that and had a good laugh at our expense.
The green in “Purple green” is referring to salads. Kale is a (salad)green which is purple. Har-dee-har-har.
Pretty straightforward other than the aforementioned Ms/Jr confusion. I did have to guess the D in the MAUD/DOHA cross. But it was an educated guess as I couldn’t imagine that Tennyson would write a poem entitled “Maul”. Sylvia Plath, maybe. Or a Star Wars fanboy.
I had JAKARTA and actually started changing it to MANILLA but KALE kept me to the straight and narrow. This was a puzzle that I had to work on for a while but it all came together going over it again and again.
The most frustrating part for me was knowing 4 members of NWA (including DJ Yella!) but NOT being able to get the elusive 5th one that I knew I needed.
And, oh yeah, not being able to shake MS PACMAN.
Not being much an arcade-goer back in the day, i started to type in MRS PACMAN and realized it didn’t fit. Then I filled in REAR END and immediately went with JR PACMAN.
Sometimes a little ignorance is a fortuitous thing.
TEAM crossing THE C kind of got me. Guessed JR PACMAN, but resisted YAMS for an unknown reason.
Anyway, aside from your confusion about the herbs and spices (which has been taken care of)– you DO know, don’t you?–that yams are totally different from sweet potatoes (which come in many varieties) and the only thing we eat here in the good ole US of A are really all sweet potatoes? You did know that, right?
(God, that run-on would have earned me an F @ 50% from my HS English teachers, even before other deductions.)
I notice a lot of overlap of Foodies/Crossworders.
