SOLVING HINT (highlight it to read it):This diagramless is 17 squares wide by 17 squares deep and has Left-to-right symmetry. The first square across is the third box in the first row.
I’d been meaning to do a diagramless crossword for some time now. Probably should have done it when the “Diagramless Crosswords” book dropped. No matter, better late than never, no? Heads up: no Java app today, you’ll have to print it out if you’re so inclined to do it. Sorry about that. But, if you want to solve it on your computer, may I suggest Ben Di Vito’s freeware Diagnil? It’s sort of a work in progress, but it should do the trick if you’re into that whole not printing things out crusade.
Tip of the hat to my editor at Sterling, Francis Heaney. He gave me the general idea for this whilst commenting on the presentation of some of my puzzles. Thanks brah. When I’m rich, I’ll by you one of these sweaters.
Share the puzzle. New one on Friday.
First diagramless I’ve ever tried to solve. I couldn’t have asked for a better one!
Had to squint and hold it at arms length…not having played space invaders, I’ll just assume that’s one of the characters in the game. I’m now at the point where I’ll do diagramless without the hint, and this one was a lot of fun. Nice change of pace.
I will never be able to get the image of the sheep- eating parrot out of my head!
Loved it!
Tried out the diagramless software — once I got the hang, it worked OK.
awesome! maybe Defender next time!?
Eleven thumbs up. Though I had to go to the Across Lite file to see what the resulting picture was.
Well, like I hinted at with the post, Francis thought all my Left-to-right puzzles looked like Space Invaders. Ergo, this puzzle.
Defender? Yikes.
So, so awesome. Had to restart a couple times before I read the hint (which was way more important than I would have guessed).
I had KIWI and ENSUING for a while. And since when is Brit. award anything besides OBE?
One of the reasons I liked this puzzle so much is because of the video game theme. I’ve had another such idea floating around in my head for a while, so I took some time today and made it. Enjoy.

The Completed puzzle looked more like a rabbit’s face to me. But that’s pretty weak “theme” off of only 1A. My first diagramless and I enjoyed it.
Dude, what a blast. My first diagramless puzzle too. Loved all the (symmetrical!) theme answers everywhere. Good stuff.
My first diagramless too and I hated it! We need at least one contrarian, I really had high hopes for the concept but I found it more frustrating then anything else. Too much work for minimal payoff. Hopefully I’ll try more and the feeling will subside.
LOVED it – one of my favorite diagramlessess of yours! Well-executed both in theme and in diagram. Man, I wish I still had some of your book to do, but I don’t.
Never much liked diagramless, but this was fun. Thanks!
I saw in another post that you said to never think of the comments section as intimidating, so I’ll go ahead and shoot – I’m stuck on this one. I’m a little new to crosswords but still have been able to solve them, but this is my first diagramless and despite all the “How Tos” I’ve read on them, I’ve reached a standstill about a third of the way down the puzzle. Without the usual online format, I’m not able to get the little nudge I need. Is there anywhere you can send me that I can get the little cheat I need to get me over the hump? Thanks.
Great grid for a diagramless, though the fill seemed to be a bit on the tough side. Then again, I always find your (im)proper nouns to be a bit harder than usual for me. I’m just not bothered by it: I like trying to figure out your wavelength.
Took me a couple days and a bit of Google, but after getting 20A I knew where this was headed. Loved the resulting grid. Almost suitable for framing. Thanks for another great, ingenious puzzle.
Trying to solve the puzzle online, or get a hint, and it’s not working…have to print the puzzle out and solve manually…what am I doing wrong?
