PROGRAM: [Adobe Acrobat]
To my lovely wife: Happy Anniversary! (And they said it would never last!) I love you! Hopefully you can get a chance to look over the above crossword. I made it with you in mind!
Love times infinity,
Brendan
For the regular readers of this blog, today (8/31) marks my wedding anniversary. Hence the above puzzle. It might be a bit trickier puzzle than normal, but for those who’ve been paying attention, it probably wouldn’t be bad at all. 1,001 apologies to those if this one made no sense. The moral, as always, is: you never know what’s going to be included on the test. So pay attention to the rambles!
Thanks for all the comments while I was away last week. I’ll try and get to them in time. And yes, Nantucket was amazing. Thanks for asking.
Also thanks to all who contributed last week. As promised, one donor would receive a copy of “Diagramless Crosswords.” Bridget O’Brien-Mitchell, send me an e-mail and I’ll hook you up.
Share the puzzle. New one on Wednesday.
Update: I forgot to post these two things on Friday, so, better do them now. My Visual Thesaurus puzzle for August is up, click here to do that. Also, puzzlemaker Eric Berlin has assembled a lovely suite of puzzles on his site. He too is doing the indie/DIY/Internet-only route, so us mavericks gotta support each other. If you have the time, please go here and check them out. Thanks.
Awwwwwww. Cute. I’m off to write a PENELOPE rebus for my anniversary. I’ve got four weeks.
This puzzle is solid in every way. Not sure how HORSE TRANQUILIZER is “informal.” It’s a simple descriptor, isn’t it? Anyway, I know (of) a K-user, so that one was cake.
Five stars.

You’re too kind.
Read your blurb and immediately started looking for LIZ at the three-letter words. Forgot about it and was pleasantly surprised when she came around again as the rebus.
Nicely done, and lotsa fun.
Why does it not surprise me you had your hand in yesterday’s NYT? Time for you to do another Cryptic!
Many happy congrats, and liked the puzzle a lot – printed it off to doodle in while supervising a quiz and in 20 minutes had all but the bottom right-hand corner out. Spotted the theme with the crossing of 18 and 7 – I have a fondness for multiple letters in a cell puzzles (the last Listener crossword had a few). Googled to get 49 down which worked out that I had a wrong guess at 65, and all hunky dory.
Oh, and 34 doesn’t work on everyone!
I got the gag, too.
Orono = approved. Stork?
I had nothing to do with yesterday’s puzzle. It was all Ashish. I did help him tighten the theme, but it was all his idea.
Having said that, another Cryptic is coming … sometime.
I’m wearing a thong now, just sayin’.
Dude… might be up at Orono next month. Just sayin’. I’ll call you.
Well here I was thinking it must be Liz Taylor’s anniversary, but which one–marriage I mean? Glad to know the answer was a lot more fun than that–congrats!
Fun puzzle as always. No idea PBK started at the U of Maine. The stuff you learn around here…
Congratulations to you both, and a very sweet puzzle it was too. The theme answers were all great.
Happy Anniversary, Happy Anniversary, Happy Anniversary….HappyAnniversary!!!
But forgive me for saying…Liz seems like a square! (groannn…sorry, couldn’t resist)
Great puzzle, BEQ…I love me some rebus themes! After the first theme answer, I wrote in the second answer with no crosses (what does that say about me?)…but the third one took a while to reveal itself …exquisite!
Loved STORK/YORK, and of course THONG and PABST…but a Fannie Flagg shoutout? Sublime!
Very cool to be able to do this for your wife. I remembered her name too well: I wanted to enter it for 1A, but at least this primed me for getting the rebus more quickly than usual at 18A.
Almost an “easy” for me, except maybe the cross of 40D and 43A; both pretty tricky for me, but guessing GRABSAT suddenly made SAAB apparent, and then the aha for 43A.
Nice puzzle got the rebus at beLIZe. Went through it relatively rapidily until I got to the gigolo part, I think you’ve used the LIZARD before but I sat there for a while.
All I gotta say is this works for the male solvers but honey there better me more then virtual roses waiting on the computer for her.
I think the full title was cut off–shouldn’t it read “Happy Anniversary with 1-Across and a 69-Across”?
Anyway, many happy returns to you both!
Very nice puzzle, and congrats!
Love these rebuses, by the way! (rebi?)
That is what the Japanese call “kawai.” Translation is “cute” but I think it’s more like cute x 100.
PS, I thought the ketamine reference on one of the theme entries was especially romantic. Did you guys spend your week vacation stuck in a k-hole?
Aww… Happy anniversary you two! Many years of happiness.
Happy anniversary!
Hairy navy snapper!
(Or happy anniversary if you prefer.)
Happy Anniversary, Brendan o’ mine!
Happy to educate.
Believe it or not, FELIZ NAVIDAD has an insider joke meaning for the two of us.
Jimmy D: you’re in a rock band. I’d expect no less than to hear you imbibe in tranqs.
See, it pays to pay attention!
Oh, there was more, trust me.
Thanks Evad.
Rebus puzzles (rebi?) are a mess of fun, fo sho.
Well, we were on Nantucket, and we did buy some drug rugs. Does that answer your question?
Thanks mom.
Nice puzzle! Happy PBRs…
