Irving Berlin’s birth name was Beilin. Upon moving to the US, his father changed the name to Baline. Your clue is wrong.
Very hard, but very nice. I got stuck on Berlin’s name at birth thing (Joyce is right) and didn’t know 38D. Finished with one mistake. Thanks, Brendan!
I tried to get to the bottom of this to no avail. Some sources say he was born Balein (e.g. Wikipedia) – while others say Baline (e.g. Britannica, Kennedy Center, Washington Post obit). I guess some confusion shouldn’t be all that surprising given he was born in eastern Russia in 1888, and whose family came through Ellis Island in 1893.
