SUBJECT AREAS: [ ACROSS LITE][ PDF]
PROGRAMS: [Across Lite] [Adobe Reader]
PROGRAMMING NOTE: Paper solving is preferred, however, the puzzle still works digitally. Cheers.
Looking for more puzzles? The Hub Crossword (Sunday puzzles by me and Emily Cox and Henry Rathvon) and Marching Bands year six have begun. So if that To Do list needs even more puzzles, you know what to do.
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
I’m wondering if this began as a 17-row grid.
That was a dandy!

Is there a reason those squares weren’t rebuses? Maybe I didn’t quite get the theme.
reread the title….
Genius. Not like the rest of us for sure….
Rebuses wouldn’t work for the across fills since they aren’t clued.
Tough one, BEQ. Always innovating.
Real fun solve!
Write down the missing letters. I had to come here for the comments to figure it out.
“Subject Areas?” “Subject Areas??” Q: WTF does this title have to do with the concept of hidden rows with no clues?? Ans: It gives no scintilla of a hint of the screwball idea that’s built into this puzzle. I figured the damn thing out, in time, and on my own, no check with the comments (since I never noticed before today that there was a “Comments” area for this puzzle site), that this idea of having two extra “hidden” rows had to be the only thing that this goof-ball puzzle could be based on. Personally, I got no satisfaction from having figured this out on my own. It’s a dumb-ass idea for an X-word puzzle IMO. Let’s not repeat this ridiculous mistake of an idea for something that someone thought would be cool. It ain’t. Honestly, if dopey ideas like this one are what pass for one’s creativity in xword design, and this puzzle is what one has to do in order to keep the mind alive in the xword field, then it’s time for a new field of work and a new career. The time has come. Be honest with yourself. This one has hit the wall. It’s not “quirky.”
That was oddly intense. I imagine that the title is “subject areas” because there are hidden areas in the puzzle that each contain the name of school subjects. Each could be written on the line between boxes, which is why “online classes” is also fitting.
I thought this was a SPLENDID puzzle! I put it aside for awhile because I struggled at first (well, I guess more than “awhile”) and then — light bulb! — figured it out today. Terrific, Brendan, thank you.
