THEMELESS MONDAY: [ ACROSS LITE][ PDF]
PROGRAMS: [Across Lite] [Adobe Reader]
Got a little too into the World Cup this year, and had convinced myself that England was like the Red Sox circa ’04 and somehow going to win the whole thing. Yeah, I must have been drunk when I thought this. Certainly being married to Liz, who’s originally from Yorkshire, must have influenced my thinking. And with that preamble, it should surprise exactly no one that the seed for this one was 34-Across.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
16A: Poor girl needs another n, doesn’t she?
In other sports news, John Isner treated himself to a 52A after each Wimbledon win.
Some SAMiAMism (a bucket list of a sort, for the crossvvord solving), some of my need-to-dos:
1. solve a crossvvord vvhile skydiving. (vvondering if this can even be possible.
2. Use the right foot to vvrite the ansvvers in. Then the left foot for another crossvvord.
3. Tattoo on the belly. For some they can virtually to this on their forearm.
4. Solve a puzzle using blood as ink.
5. The Maelstrom: solving 10 to 12 puzzles at one time, only entering one ansvver in the first designated puzzle, then move on to #2, enter one ansvver there, and so forth.
6. Some public vandalism. (Hampton Roads VA don’t mind)
7.(Censored)
8. Hovv the Marquis de Sade vvent about vvriting in the last scene of Quills. You have to dravv the line sometime, but if i’m ever in a Maximum Security Prison i could eventually stoop to that.
i’M taking a hint from a famous quote from HAROLD AND MAUDE. “Live as if you can come up vvith something good to talk about in the locker room.”
No, she doesn’t. Google her.
Wikipedia:
“Roxanne” is a song by English rock band The Police. Written by lead singer and bassist Sting, the song was released in April 1978 as a single from their debut album Outlandos d’Amour. It was written from the point of view of a man who falls in love with a prostitute. On re-release in 1979, the song peaked at number 12 on the UK Singles Chart.
The song ranked No. 388 on the Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time”[4] and was voted No. 85 by VH1 on its list of the “100 Greatest Rock Songs”.
In 2008, “Roxanne” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.[5]
The confusion here is that the entry was originally clued with respect to the Police song and silently updated to be the writer.
As David noted, apparently you and I have been talking about two different clues. So both of our initial comments are correct: Brendan’s initial Police clue, which I never saw, was wrong, but his Gay clue replacement is on target.
I wish Brendan would post notes when he corrects already-posted clues, but I guess that’s too much to expect considering that these are all free puzzles!
Talk about mangling a good quote! Sheesh!
