The American Crossword Puzzle Tournament starts this week. It’s the Super Bowl of puzzling. The mother of all puzzle tournaments. It’s also the mother of all puzzle freak reunions. Lord knows, the last time I competed was in ’06 and I managed to land at the impossible 123rd place overall. And let’s face it, even if I knew the answers ahead of time, I still wouldn’t do much better than that. And so, I opted to know all the answers instead and become a judge for this thing. So yeah, you guys go for the solving, I’ll go for the adjudicating. We can all get heavy at the bar afterward. Sounds like a winning combination.
So will I have a puzzle in the Tournament this year? Well, technically I do. I have a diagramless in the Pick your Poison event on Friday night. We covered this fact already last Thursday, but it bears repeating. What also bears repeating is that unless you’re one of I’ll say 10 certain competitors you have absolutely no shot of winning this thing, so it should really be all about Meeting The Family. It’s good, we don’t bite, unless you want us too.
UPDATE: Okay, it can now be announced, I’ve got a puzzle in the tournament.
So yeah, to get us ready for the ACPT, I’m re-running some puzzles I made for them back in the day this week. If you like them, and you can’t make the journey out to Stamford, Connecticut, you might consider one of the play at home versions. Same puzzles. Definitely cheaper. All that’s missing is the human element but I guess if you keep tabs on #ACPT tags, you can have that covered too.
Anyway. Sign up today. See you all on Friday.
Congrats on having two puzzles involved in Tournament Weekend! Wish I could be there, but life and stuff …
Good puzzle. Took me longer than it should have!
Also, the formatting is a little messed up (maybe just my machine?). The clues don’t wrap properly in the right frame. Can’t see all the letters… I had to download the .puz and finish in Across Lite.
Grr. A puzzle laden with self-references. At best, it’s a style that’s tolerable, but after yesterday’s NYT with the same theme, no, just no. Not two days in a row.
Ovens:they are in a range. Burners:now they are ON the range.
Love this one!!
I think this the most difficult crossword you have ever presented. Took me a very long time to figure it out. 🤕
Nice puzzle, very nice. Very very very very nice.
