In case you missed it, I had this past Friday’s Wall Street Journal puzzle. Do it here: [PDF] [Across Lite].
And in case you missed our recurring BEQ Fan Du Jour columns, let’s get back to it. Say hey to Ken Lauterbach of Jackson Heights, Queens. Ken not only introduced himself to yours truly at Lollapuzzoola a few weeks back, he also wore one of the bad ass B.E.Q. shirts (get yrs. here). The pics a tad blurry, but let’s just pretend it’s a Gerhard Richter photorealist painting. Anyway, Ken writes:
I’ve been wearing this shirt most weekends since last summer with never an incident, not a word from anyone about it. Finally last month, I was eating dinner in a Mexican restaurant in Red Hook with some friends, including my good friend Victor Mather, a sometime crossword blogger who was the one who got me into crossword competitions a few years ago. After about an hour some guy who was leaving the restaurant said “I’ve been staring at that shirt from across the room for the whole time I’ve been here and I can’t figure out what is going on.” I told him what it was and he seemed satisfied with my explanation and went on his way. Then the next weekend somebody else said “Cool R.E.M shirt” not noticing that there was anything amiss and getting annoyed when I tried to point it out. I suppose my obligations as Shirt Wearer will be complete and the classic joke format of the triple will be realized if somebody in the next few weekend says “Hey, I love Brendan Emmett Quigley, but what’s with the serpentine imagery and the Harborcoat?”
Let me know when that happens Ken. I’d like to meet him/her.
Send in your fan photos of you doing my puzzle, using my swag, stalking me, whatever! In the meantime, share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
