Next month marks the fourth installment of the ever-entertaining Lollapuzzoola, also known as “the other major crossword tournament held in New York City.” I was fortunate to participate in two of them: I wrote a puzzle for one (try it here), and I competed in the other one. Both were fantastic times, unsurprisingly, because the events have been ably hosted by Brian Cimmet and Ryan Hecht (of Ryan & Brian fame). Well, this year, Ryan’s out, and Patrick Blindauer stepped in to fill the big shoes. And honestly, I can’t imagine anybody better to do that. One visit to El Bindo’s website and you’ll see he’s got personality.
Lollapuzzoola is a bit more freewheeling than other crossword tournaments. Some puzzles in the past have asked you to make noise or figure out what music is being played whilst solving them. For the less than experienced solver, they offer Google tickets, which will grant you any answer you wish. And, it wouldn’t be much of a crossword convention if they didn’t serve lots of Oreos. Question: when’s the Nehi available?
Alas, I won’t be able to make it this year, but I have a stellar excuse: my daughter is due around that time. But perhaps you’re free? I wouldn’t be mentioning it if I didn’t think it was worth your time. In fact, I’ve been test solving the puzzles, and they’re just great. So click on the link above for more information and go to it.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
