Alex Boisvert pinged me a while back saying that he was planning to do a weekly video feature wherein he challenged the legendary Tyler Hinman to a speed solving competition. Alex is a decent solver, but he’s nowhere close to Tyler’s level, so Tyler was going to have to be handicapped in ways of Alex’s choosing. He told me a few of the added challenges (no spoilers for future episodes), and they made me laugh. So you’re damn right I’m giving this project a cosign. I’m flattered that they used one of my puzzles (that would be this past Monday’s) in the inaugural episode, which I posted up above. So if you haven’t solved it, well, you’ve been warned, although, thanks YouTube, we can see half the filled in grid. Fun fact: this is the first time that I have witnessed Tyler actually solve one of my puzzles. It’s a completely humbling experience to see him tear through it. Both gentlemen tear through it, really. This thing took me hours to write and well, this YouTube doesn’t take hours to watch. Le sigh.
In case you were wondering: Tyler’s normally one of my testers for all the site puzzles, but he was kept in the dark with this one. Had to make it fair, you know. Tyler did see today’s crossword. He said: “Subtle theme, but I did eventually see it.”
When you’re done with that, why not check out my band The Boston Typewriter Orchestra’s latest single “Underwood Blues?” Bang it loud while you’re solving.
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
