37D is an example of why nobody will rip off a BEQ puz and get away with it. Nearly blew coffee out of my nostrils.

loved the puzzle, though i too didn’t get the theme until i finished.

Didn’t get it either. Checked Crossword Fiend and still don’t get it. Now believe this is one of those generational thangs.
ps had filled in from crosses and went Huh? on 37D. Until crosscourt, above, aroused my curiosity and I Googled it. Ugh. Somebody bring back the Darwin prize.
