Yesterday marked my first diagramless puzzle in the Times in like forever. If you haven’t done it already, have at it: [Across Lite] [PDF]. As always, if you want to solve it on line, I’d recommend giving Diagnil a try.
Heads up: today’s puzzle’s an oldie but goodie from the “Time Out” days. Still, should be brand new to most of you. The comic who provided the quip slays me. Slays Liz too. Enjoy.
Speaking of comedy, I was privileged to receive a copy of Deb Amlen’s first book “It’s Not PMS, It’s You!” Deb’s in the puzzling community as a part of “The Onion” rotation. Anyway, she and her husband Dave are on the “must-visit” list every time Liz and I are down in the Noo Yawk area. Their warmth and generosity roped us in, and Deb’s acerbic sense of humor kept us coming back for more. So it’s good to see her putting her talents to good use with her book. It’s part send-up part actual how-to guide to modern-day dating wherein Deb juggles some rather disparate writing styles to capture the insanity of it all. I found the self-reflective bits about her own family quite well done. Maybe because we know the parties involved. Probably because it was the most based on truth. And truth equals comedy. So, if I’m writing about it, chances are I’m recommending it. Get one for a single girl you love, and while you’re at it, become a regular at Deb’s site, too.
Thanks again to all who were able to tip last week. Our winner this month is Anne Dumais of Teaneck, NJ.
It’s still not too late to enter last Friday’s contest! And let me tell you, we’ve had some stellar entries so far. Hoo boy, this recap is going to be fun.
Share the puzzle. New one on Wednesday.
SAD IPOD was new to me.
Ahem… didn’t like AHUM.
Needed every cross for TUDYK, but when I looked him up, I realized I knew his face, just didn’t know his name.
LOVE eddie izzard.
hah loved it. needed the crosses for TUDYK also, and wasn’t wild about WVOIP. but everything else in the puzzle was just terrific.
TUDYK? WVOIP? ZLOTY? SADIPOD? WTF? Fun though. I’ll know ZLOTY next time – but all the rest will surely be lost in my scotch addled brain.
My comments seem to keep getting swallowed up by the TypePad monster, but I’ll try again.
Thanks so much for the plug, B. We’re pretty fond of you and Liz, too.
And as far as the author of the quote goes, you’re still going to need a tray.
Re: the Times puzzle, any way those of us who can’t check last week’s answers can get a spoiler on the starting square?
Glad you didn’t go with “hot, black, and with a spoon in them.”
Yep. Eddie Izzard rocks.
The fill starting with TUDYK kicked me around hard in this one, as others have said.
If you’re gonna go for the quote, though, Eddie’s always a good source.
Didn’t know either member of the 50D/60A cross, but fortunately, the names were common enough last names.
And also yuck on AHUM.
I got TUDYK off the T, but I’m a Whedon-phile (‘Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!’). Still impressive since I never saw the movie (the book was better!). WVOIP on the other hand…I’ve heard of Voip, but I don’t know what the first W is for…oh, wireless.
And I still don’t get the quote. I feel like a fish on a bicycle.
Still cannot figure out Friday’s contest, but I enjoyed today’s puzzle and am working on the diagramless. Thank you, BEQ, for the enriching entertainment!
Wow! A quote puzzle where I didn’t have to work the crossings to fill in the quote! Once I got to the EDDIEIZZARD entry that is. Briefly thought the last part was going to be COVEREDINBEES… but that didn’t fit. As you’re guessing another fan!
Seriously, how is your mental health stacking 9 letters of a 13/11 stack… cos that’s some crazy gridding right there!
The bottom-right beat me up and spoiled my time though… Not sure why I couldn’t remember ORTON though.
SAD IPOD? WVOIP? ORTON? I used the Reveal on those three.
Plastic cup? I was working on IN A GLASS __
Loved ZLOTY and ZAIRE next to one another, and PAINE and MARAT (not ONE Revolution, but TWO!)
AHUM? Really, chum?
Eagerly awaiting the Friday puzzle revelation; although I solved the puzzle ALL BY MYSELF, I cannot for the life of me figure out the theme, let alone a hidden answer. Darn. Being born in Georgia doesn’t confer an advantage, I must say. (Two related answers are in mind, but plainly that is not nearly enough. Scowl.)
I totally was expecting “Covered in BEES!” It even fits–so I had to erase it. THANKS!
hahaha BEES! I’m glad the photo of Eddie Izzard isn’t visible when I pull up BEQ.com otherwise it would have spoiled the fun of uncovering one of my favorite comediennes in the puzzle. huge firefly fan too, woulda liked to see wash clued that way.
hard at work on the latest diagramless
Did just fine with this one. By the way, hang onto that iPod Shuffle with a SAD IPOD icon “on” it – such a [n]one-of-a-kind item sporting a display should fetch a pretty penny on eBay ;-P
