Reader Brian Carroll of San Francisco brought to my attention this money shot quote from an article from yesterday’s International Herald Tribune. The feature was about San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson. Before I get to the quote, a couple things surprised me about the article.
One: that’s either the coolest or most unfortunately-named athlete, ever, entirely dependent on how much you like “Pet Sounds.” Looking at the picture of said Mr. Wilson, specifically focusing on that beard, I’d say he most definitely likes “Pet Sounds.”
Two: was anyone else surprised the New York Times/IHT had a sports section? Just me?
Okay, Brian Wilson’s money shot:
“I’d like to be a crossword clue one day,” he said. “I want to be in The New York Times’s Sunday edition. Right now, the clue ‘Giants great’ is always Mel Ott. I want my clue to be down, not across. The down ones are usually harder. And when I’m the clue, I’ll fill it in — just that one — and frame it.“How sweet would that be?”
In the odd chance you read this, Brian, I’ve already covered this topic before and made that puzzle.
Share the puzzle. New one tomorrow.
I wouldn’t spell 21A that way- is that kosher?
Re: 42A: I already had that song stuck in my head, so extra thanks for feeding the earworm. 🙂
I didn’t get the theme until I was done, but I don’t know from sports. Well enough to recognize it eventually, I guess.
37A – I quickly wrote in EVERET. I think I have to return my professional crossword solver card.
A Newsday puzzle with a slight edge.
On the medium end of easy for me despite the Wilburys being a gimmie. Biggest problem was APPALS (which is kosher) which I spelled apalls (which is not). And then I kept trying to think of the streets around Wrigley field for the something-AVE of “Cub’s home”. >_< Lived in the Bay Area for many years and am a long time Giants fan. TBH - Giants/Red Sox World Series? I'd root for the Giants. But in the last few years, I've fallen out of the habit of following any of the professional sports. I hope the Giants win, but I just can't get worked up over it anymore.
