I think there’s a typo in the 57D clue – or I’m missing something. SW was brutal – DNF.
Lots o’ surprises here:
1D (huh?), 26A(huh?), 62A(OK – I expect obscure musical references), 8A (is that really correct?)…
Agreed on 8A and 57D. Also do not get the clue for 49D at all.
Lots of great fill here, though.
Movies or something leaked (as on the Internet) would be 49D leaks, so I get that, but I’m with you guys on 8A and tense of 57D. Not really sure on 20A either.
Also, around here at least, the days of the week are MTWRF (and sometimes S) for classes.
I tried a different name for 50A first…
I’ve got Chambers dictionary on my iPhone now, but that didn’t help me much here. (In cryptic forums, the answer is always “Chambers says…”)
enl (enlisted one) one in the mil (lilitary
My Puzzlepalooza team was the last to solve your puzzle. I did not fare much better here.
Tough puzzle! I too had a problem with 57d. Took 8a to be a synonym for a big gut. Had to guess E or A at 26 a/13d and went with E which, according to Amy’s blog, is wrong. But, CARRERA marble gets a lot of google hits???
Same EAT/ATE comment, but I liked this puzzle. 14D stymied me for a while (inspired by last Thursday’s NYT?), but I liked the payout there. Thumbs up here.
I don’t understand all the hubbub about the tense of the clue at 57D. It made perfect sense to me. “He packed away his meal in about two minutes” for “He ATE his meal in about two minutes” seems kosher in my book. Using my example, you wouldn’t say “He EAT his meal in about two minutes”, would you? Could someone who didn’t agree with the cluing please clarify for me what the confusion is?
Right, you said >packed< not pack. That's what we're saying. Tense of answer is supposed to match tense of clue.
Abigail, maybe the clue changed between the time you solved the puzzle and the time I solved the puzzle (and if that is the case, I’m sorry for bringing up this issue in the first place), but when I solved the puzzle, 57D read, as it does now, “Packed away”. As I said, sorry for the confusion if this was something errant in the original publishing of the puzzle that his since been rectified.
Ah I think I understand (part) of the confusion; the online puzzle app has “packed away” while the .puz and .jpz version have “pack”. But all three have 8A as bay window which I still do not get.
It still reads “Pack away” over seven years later.
