Manny Nosowsky loved making themeless puzzles with this pattern. That is to say, grids with the six longest theme answers intersecting each other in the middle so that there’s a chunky 3×3 white in the dead center. Okay, that’s not a great description, because we can all fill in a 3×3 corner easily. But when you have the good, long stuff in the middle, it makes the other corners much harder to cram full of fun stuff. In some ways, these are harder to pull off than the triple stacks. Take a quick peek at the master’s work and be amazed at the artistry. Manny, if you’re a fan of this blog, make some more puzzles soon, okay?
Two weeks left to get the bonus 21x themeless before I’m deleting it. Click here to get it and here to read about it.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
Nice grid…and I completely agree with you re: Manny N’s puzzles.
And thanks for the shout out to Tim Thomas! Go B’s!
Nice middle section here. I chose SWEETANDSOUR for the Mcnuggets clue. Same # of letters but wrong. 1A Have no idea so I have to wait for some vertical letters to aid me. Same with 18A. Just a lot of great specific clues and avoiding any general clues ( Hairy Biblical twin came closest to this ).
What cartoon had the character in magenta?
Talk about in my wheelhouse, BEQ — destroyed my themeless record on this one. Just knew all the trivia that I normally struggle at here. Nice grid, and I second that emotion to get Manny out of retirement!
This puzzle was pure amazingness. Tip jar worthy!
Great puzzle.
Needed every crossing for GUY NOIR and initially talked myself out of LPS, but smooth otherwise.
Oddly, I found it sort of easy. I wonder if it’s an age-related thing. Half the long answers were gimmes. I’m usually one to find most of your puzzles Hard to Very Hard to Ridiculously Hard. Great puzzle regardless.
Was that really Courtney on the cover or a model? Wiki says a model named Bishop. Still a terrific puzzle!
One of your quickest themelesses for me. My biggest stumble was probably all the time I spent trying to remember another name for babydoll dresses for 40-A. (“Kinderwhore? No, that’s too long…”)
Measium, as far as BEQ Mondays go. Though isn’t a chaser a beer that follows a shot? (Not sure I’m up on my liquor lingo.)
Nice puzzle. Way to rub it in at 31A.
Manny suffered a stroke a while ago. When I last talked with him, he said he’d made his last puzzle. I miss him too.
